I just had a conversation with some old guy in C'ville (total stranger) who was warning me about some crazy homeless guy, real white trash type, who frequently haunts High St. Then he goes into this whole shpiel about the history of the neighborhood, including North Campus, and how there used to be drug dealers on campus and homeless bikers, and how the immigrants like the Somali shoot each other further north. My question is...
...how much of this is true and how much is BS?

if you strip down the sensationalist tone, it all sounds pretty accurate in a general way.
1. there are white (and black), crazy homeless people along high street in clintonville.
2. There are drug dealers on campus. that one's a no-brainer.
3. there is a large somali community in columbus that seems more concentrated in the morse rd / 161 area, perhaps by cleveland avenue? I can not, however confirm somali on somali gun violence. Statisticly my guess is that yes one somali has shot another in columbus history.
4. homeless bikers? Is that like trash-picking cyclists? don't we have those here?

The only argument I'd have with that is the Somali thing. While there is a ridiculous amount of gun violence north of there, and a large population of Somali immigrants, I don't think the two have anything to do with each other. My own experience, the Somali community is hard working as hell...like crazy hard working...who happens to be focused in a community of low income housing, where shootings happen a lot.

I think you will hear stories like this about anywhere in the city. Some areas are worse off than others, but you live with it.

In all fairness to Nd, his was strictly based on personal experience and even stated he wanted to not go beyond that.
My own personal experience is what I base my opinion on as well, which is that I've known probably 30?-ish Somali immigrants, all were hard working as hell and just frankly poor.

One other small note, and this is not intended to be condescending, but I'd guess that 99.9% of us on this message board grew up, at worst, in a "bad neighborhood".
The worst neighborhood in the U.S. would be the equivalent of Beverly Hills compared to the best neighborhood in Somalia.
