Has anyone seen the looting yet? Craaaaaaaazy. It looks like someone finally snapped at that eyesore and destroyed the front of the building. I don't condone violence but this spot was asking for it, having sat vacant for so long and prohibiting any productive development in a crucial part of Clintonville.

Hate to disappoint but it was a car crash at 4:30am this morning.
it does look like a bomb went off there though.

some police scanner junkie has claimed to overhear the police reporting that they clocked the car doing 120 mph.
which would explain the smashed storefronts and the 70 feet or so of devastation along the street. telephone poles, benches, bike racks, signs, everything flattened up to the underground walkway.Posted 1 year ago # -
Shucks. Well, hmm... I guess my twisted desires blur my judgment. Maybe more cars can drive through and do us all a favor.

I foresee further application of plywood sheets and not much else being done unfortunately.
it's gonna look awesome!Posted 1 year ago # -
It's bad.
It's really bad.If I didn't know better, I would never have thought a single car could have done this (a Mercedes, from what I hear). At the very least, this looks like a bus ran into the storefront and down the street.
That or a bomb.

Aside from the destruction, this makes me sad because it probably means the building is going down for sure. Yes, it's been an eyesore for a while, but I'd much rather see it rehabilitated than turned to rubble. I hope we can at least have a park (or a community garden) there until someone buys the lot.

Yeah, it's hard to believe a single car could do such damage. DaRuuuuunnnk.
I personally believe it would be better to level the place than to try rehabbing it. Its been too neglected too long. Hopefully since it looks like LA 1992, things will happen quicker.

I spent a good bit of the '90s in The Winemaker's Shop-some good (blurry) memories... That building is so cool. Their warehouse still looked like a theater-even curtains on the side of the screen/stage were still intact. A corner with real potential. CAC forced abandonment (for a CVS or some other totally redundant BS that obviously never happened) and now it is an eyesore and I'd venture a health concern-the basement is totally flooded with who knows what. Thanks for the pics Talcott! I want to ride bikes there with my 8yr old, if the rain lets up.

@hivner1: It might be more practical to level it, but I'm worried that any new building is going to look very generic. Better than a boarded up mess, but not as neat as that building could be. I hope to be proven wrong.
@0Angle: You're welcome. It was fun to get to play CU photo journalist for this one.
Here's WBNS' report on it: Driver Crashes Into Several Buildings
I can't believe the driver only suffered a broken arm. The car door was laying on the sidewalk, reinforced concrete, a bike rack, and a metal bench were tossed to the side, a whole tree was downed, and that's not even mentioning to damage to the building itself.
I'm just glad that this happened on a mostly-vacant block.

An informed source tells me it was a fairly young man/boy and he was pretty impaired and borrowed the car without permission. I'm guessin' he's in a heap o' trouble

Wow, I went by there earlier today and was wondering what had happened. I can't believe one car did all that!

Is it wrong that I was kinda bummed when I heard he just got a broken arm? I'm sure he'll be back in the drivers' seat soon enough to enjoy his Constitutional right to drive without having to serve jail time or pay for all the damage he did.

Must have been a sweet car to get up to 120 on High Street. Luckily, no pedestrians were hurt. Was the car headed north or south? Not that makes any difference but that is an incredible amount of damage caused by one car.

He really must have hated Clintonville Electric. They are lucky nobody told him they moved...

Not that makes any difference but that is an incredible amount of damage caused by one car.Judging by the direction of the bus stop sign, it looks like he was heading south. It looks like he skipped the curb and must have sideswiped the building and then ran down the sidewalk, turning back to the street right before the tunnel that the elementary school students use to cross High St.
Actually, looking at the pictures, I wonder if the car was running on just its left side wheels while on the sidewalk. I can't think of any other way that it could have smashed all of those windows. Even then, I can't figure out how there was enough momentum for it to crush (and I mean crush) the bench toward the end of that run.

Maybe this event will spark some interest and get things moving in that building again.
A buddy told me that Liz Lessner looked into opening a restaurant there but decided against it because it would have been more financially prudent to demo the place than rehab it.
My wife and I saw this earlier today, ran some errands, and within an hour is was cleaned up. I'm glad Talcott got the pics as well!
