Cleaning rugs at the car wash?!

I want to clean my area rugs before it is too cold to wash and dry them outside. I've never cleaned area rugs before, other than spot cleaning and vacuuming, and I need some advice. I've been trying to look things up online and came across people cleaning area rugs at self serve car washes. Has anyone ever done this? Does it really work? Would I be better off just taking them outside and washing them with rug cleaner?
These are pretty cheap rugs. Two are from Lowes and one from Ikea, so I'm not really concerned with damaging them. I just want to clean them up so they will look nice a bit longer.

I've had the most luck using a carpet cleaner with a mixture of Oxy Clean instead of the stuff they normally come with.

Carpet cleaner is probably easiest. You can rent them at Lowes, I think.

people do the car wash thing all the time, works well, especially for car interior carpet. it's more of a pain for that cause you have to remove your car seats to get that carpet out. but yeah, they just power wash it and let it dry in the sun and then re-install with great results.

agree, i rented a Rug Doctor once and had to buy the soap, worked really well.

I take rugs to Martin's, it's in the alley behind Wendy's S. High German Village. Price is good, they do a great job and I like the people there. Once my German Shepherd ate a pound of butter yada yada and the rug came back like new!
But bath mats and stuff, I wash in a front-loader (no agitators) and air dry.

Sure, why not.
You can clean non-car things at the car wash. I have cleaned my bicycle in one a couple times, but that might not be wise as the pressure water can get into bearings :(
You can go to a bar and not drink alcohol, and I even go to art events even though I am not really into art. Don't judge a book by its cover.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone! I'm going to go the rug doctor route. I didn't realize that I could just pick one up at Kroger. It seems like the easiest and cheapest.
The car wash idea still intrigues me, but I just can't figure out how I would get the darn rug home. I don't want to put it in my car all sopping wet. I'm not even sure if I could lift it after that!
