City to lease vacant land for $10 for community gardens

Amazing how cool efforts by the city fly below the radar. Apparently you can lease land on vacant abandoned property for urban community gardens...15 pages of properties mainly westside and eastside. or if you can't do the paperwork, a good list of where to squat....

Imagine how much food could be grown for farmer's markets and homeless shelters. Great idea. Yea, they should make this better known to the public.

I believe some of the lots are as cheap as $500. The list provided seems to indicate you can buy them.

You can, but you need a development plan. (which I think means building plan.) I would totally be down for buying one.

I'm surprised you can't keep it as open space, and not build. Though it would be super cool to start recreating mounds and earthworks, labyrinths, and megaliths on vacant land....image micro mounds of mulch and construction debris.

It would be great to buy and use as a garden, but I think they want you to build so it gets back on the tax rolls. Vacant lots have very low taxes.

I think it woould be a great place to implement some kind of rain barrel system. Mostly though, I think you have to just hope it rains enough.

There are certainly solutions. Just a common issue I hear about.

Fruit Trees would be rad though. Would love to have fresh fruit, but not quite in my own back yard. ;)

I'm pretty much out of space in my own yard - too much shade. I suppose I could rent a plot as a community garden, but I kinda want it to be ALL MINE ;)

ETA: Looks like you can pay to hook into the water system - though I'd want to own rather than lease if I'm going to spend $1500 to do that. Water Connection Charges
