I really don't have a strong feeling towards the Red Light Cameras one way or another. Are there better ways to improve safety on our roads? YES, although more expensive to implement. Are Red Light Cameras an invasion of privacy? Not really if you're on public property. Are Red Light Cameras a slippery slope to other types of enforcement? I highly doubt it.

These wouldn't be considered if we weren't so accepting of red light cameras. That is a slippery slope to other types of enforcement in my book.

There are many responsible drivers who get nailed by these machines. If there is some sort of mistake, you can appeal the ticket and get out of it.
I'd hope so. Seen the camera on 4th & Main fire off when someone didn't run the light. I understand the camera relies on sensors back from the intersection and that if it thinks you're going too fast to stop it starts taking photos.
Apparently "too fast to stop" occasionally requires recalibration.

I was referring more to the claims of the impending anti-coffee-spilling and microwave-misuse laws.

Pst: If anyone is interested, this topic will be discussed at City Hall on Monday... you can speak on the topic if you fill out a speaker's slip in advance:

I see. I was refering to when laws are made because of one persons misfortune. I see the cameras as a response to traffic accident studies. A bit of a stretch to compare I suppose. More of a reference to the one size fits all formula. Thanks for the tip in regards to the meeting.

No problem. Even if we're not all in agreement on this issue I totally encourage anyone and everyone who is passionate about this topic to go speak in front of council about it.
To be honest, if you help to get the traffic cameras removed, I probably wouldn't shed too many tears. Although they can provide an amusing source of entertainment:

I'm only for camera enforcement under 2 conditions. First, the company operating them can only receive 10% of the revenue (with a statutory cap). Second, the remainder would go to a state-wide fund for health, or education or something similar. If it's really about safety, we'll find out.
I heard a story recently about some kids printing fake license plate numbers and intentionally running red lights in some town out west to get other people tickets. ...Might be a fun way to flood the system

Still worked.

New Columbus Red-Light Cameras To Record Video 24/7
By TOM BROCKMAN
Published: November 05, 2010More red light cameras are on their way to Columbus streets. However, these will do more than just catch drivers breaking the law. Safety officials say these cameras could help solve crimes because they'll be recording video all day, every day.
The 20 red-light cameras up and running in Columbus have one main purpose: to make dangerous intersections safer.

City wants to add red-light cameras to outlying areas
Monday, December 6, 2010
BY ROBERT VITALE
The Columbus DispatchRed-light cameras that have been concentrated in and around Downtown since their introduction to Columbus in 2006 might soon be coming to a neighborhood near you.
City safety officials are considering expanding the intersection-monitoring cameras to areas of the Far East, Far West and North sides where motorists have been given a pass for four years.
Two of five intersections newly approved for cameras are outside of I-270: Sawmill and Hard roads on the Northwest Side and E. Broad Street and Reynoldsburg-New Albany Road on the Far East Side.

Interesting statement, since red light cameras can actually increase accidents

Generally I don't like the things but I'd be glad to see one at Henderson and Olentangy. people die there. I don't know why they put one in front of the Kroger at Henderson/Gettysburg first.
But the 24/7 video is creepy somehow

I agree with you about the intersection of Henderson and Olentangy. My father just got into an accident there last week. That intersection is crazy.

Apparently you can get a ticket for turning right on red without making a complete stop.
Ask me now I know, lol...from a one way even! What bullshit!

People die in t-bone collisions when running red lights.
Fatalities are less likely in rear-end collisions, which are what can increase from these cameras.

At some point we realized that if you heard screeching tires there wasn't likely an accident.. There was only the crash......

There are times when the crash sound comes first, then the screeching.
I've seen more crashes, and more deadly, on the 50-mph sections of Henderson from Reed to Olentangy. And Henderson is still 50 coming down the hill to Olentangy River Road, so eastbound traffic tends to come into the intersection hot and fast. Not long ago someone in a Murano took the front corner off of a school bus, and died.

... But the 24/7 video is creepy somehowKinda like the traffic cams you watch on GTC channel 3. Although these will be closer to the ground than many of the traffic cams. I am indifferent about these cams and ones already up at intersections(non red-light), I only hope the footage can easily be requested and viewed by the public.
As far as the red light cams, I get nervous and prob stop on a yellow. I'll get rear ended someday since people don't notice the sign or giant camera on the side of the road.

Keep in mind they have that statewide network of security cameras these days, too.
