WHAT CAN COLUMBUS BE IN 2050?
Urban Land Institute Columbus Unveils The City In 2050 Display During Its Grand Opening Reception
On April 6, central Ohioans will have their very first opportunity to see The City in 2050 Display, representing the Urban Land Institute (ULI) Columbus’ ongoing initiative to collect and outline planning principles and ideas for the City of Columbus and central Ohio over the next 40 years.
The April 6 Grand Opening reception to unveil The Display will be held at the Easton Town Center, 4064 Bond St. in Columbus from 5 – 7 p.m. It is open to the public and individuals interested in attending can register on the ULI Columbus website at http://columbus.uli.org/ or by phone at 1.800.321.5011 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
“The City in 2050 Display is a unique opportunity to experience and learn about innovative and future-thinking responses to the critical issues facing our world, our cities and our neighborhoods – the issues that specifically will be facing the Columbus of 2050 in which we will live, work and play,†said Jonathan Barnes, ULI Columbus District Council Chairman and principal at Jonathan Barnes Architecture and Design. “Imagine not just peering into the future but having the opportunity to add input. That’s what The City in 2050: Creating Blueprints for Change is all about and all this from the most expert and credible authority on urban land use in the world.â€Â
The dynamic and visually engaging display highlights themes crucial to our future including the strategic role of green; full-spectrum housing; transportation and mobility; real estate and development philosophies and best practices; water, power and light; new technologies that make buildings smart; city planning and building; shopping, learning and socializing; and metro metrics. These themes form the foundation for the initiative and are illustrated through case studies and research findings collected worldwide by Urban Land Institute. The Display also includes a short video filmed by Woolpert Inc. featuring Columbus’ development leaders and ULI members explaining the significance of the initiative. If you have ever asked the question: “how will we live, work and play in the future?†visiting this display is your first step in being part of the envisioning initiative city leaders are undertaking to form and contribute ideas.
The initiative is funded in part by a ULI community action grant and is a collaborative effort by ULI Columbus, Franklin County Development Office and the Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission (MORPC). For the project, ULI will examine the future of central Ohio through themes that include transportation, housing and the region’s natural assets.
Registration fees for the April 6 Grand Opening event are $10 for ULI members, $20 for non-members and $5 for non-member students. The event is free for ULI student members. The display will remain at the center throughout 2011 and is sponsored by Easton Community and Limited Brands Foundations.
