Wonderland Announces Cinemusica

On October 15, Wonderland is hosting Cinemusica, at the Arena Grand Movie Theater.
Doors open at 7pm and the show begins at 7:30pm.

Cinemusica is a showcase featuring the collaborative works of filmmakers, musicians, and performing artists. Borrowing and resurrecting a concept created by former local film house manager Kevin Ward, Cinemusica will allow these creative individuals the opportunity to team up on multi-format pieces.

The idea is relatively simple. In some cases, we have provided musicians with silent films from local filmmakers and given them the task to write the score. In other cases we have provided local filmmakers with music to create a film from. At the event, the films will be shown on screen and the musicians will perform live. The result is a one-time, live collaboration in front of an audience. In addition to these performances, there will ads from local companies, word scrambles and fake movie trailers by local comedians, and a live DJ set.

Films for this Cinemusica are Andrew Ina, Dan Gerdeman, Corey Aumiller, Tony Belleau, Alex Trimpe, and Matt Meindal teaming up with musicians Aaron Quinn, the Selenite Orchestra, and Tigers in the Mirror. The DJ set will be provided by DJ Walker Crane and comedic components provied by the Asbestos Crew for an incredible collaborative event.

Cinemusica doors open at 7:00pm and performances begin at 7:30pm on Saturday, October 15 at the Arena Grand Movie Theatre, 175 West Nationwide Boulevard, Columbus, 43215.

So now that the original physical building is no longer in play, has Wonderland turned into more of an art organizing body helping promote the arts in several different venues? I was just surprised to see them promoting an event, that’s all.

Over the past 2 months, we have been analyzing properties to find a suitable home for the physical space concept. Our intention has always been to lead programming to bring aspects of the creative community together and find ways to highlight it in the public. While we have made great strides in securing a new home, there was no reason not to continue programming with the partners that have been reaching out to us to work with them in their spaces.

Cinemusica is a great example of something that can engage several aspects of the creative community, while at the same time create a unique event for the public. Arena Grand Theater has offered to be a willing and gracious host, and we believe this will be a great event.

I have never been to the Avant Garage event.. but several people have let us know that it is a similar concept. I hope that we can produce an event as quality as what the Wex does. With the performers and filmmakers we have... it is looking like we have some really high quality performances and screenings lined up.

Thank you to everyone for a great Cinemusica on Saturday evening.

Performers, filmmakers, volunteers, sponsors, the theater staff, and attendees made it a excellent evening. We appreciate the willingness of all involved to take a risk and do something a bit different. We will be hosting the event again, most likely spring next year.
