The Cincinnati Streetcar: Triumphing Over an Anti-Transit Governor
15 DECEMBER 2011
Cincinnati — you really just can’t give this town enough credit. The Queen City and its streetcar coalition can’t be stopped, despite the best efforts of Ohio Governor John Kasich to stamp out all traces of a passenger train in the Buckeye State.

City OKs streetcar station design
Business Courier
Date: Tuesday, December 20, 2011, 3:03pm ESTThe city of Cincinnati has selected DNK Architects to design the shelters for the proposed downtown streetcar project. The shelters, located at 18 stops along the route, will be made of durable, lightweight materials that let natural light through, according to a press release. They will have a route map, info about the system and an electronic sign that displays the arrival time of the next streetcar.

Streetcar talks at impasse
7:50 PM, Feb. 8, 2012
Written by
Mike BoyerA $12 million dispute over the cost of moving or replacing utility lines for Cincinnati’s future streetcar project boiled over into a public disagreement between officials on Wednesday. In a letter to the city, Duke Energy said the company won’t move its utility lines from under the streetcar right of way “until the city commits to reimbursement of costs caused by the streetcar utility project.”

Heh. Anne & I were down there today, and ate lunch at a restaurant (Taste of Belgium Bistro) that just opened three months ago ON the streetcar route. The owner of the restaurant has been a big supporter and advocate for the line. His restaurant is on the corner of Race & Twelfth, both of which will be under construction, and he was extremely excited about it.
Columbus retailers, take note. ;)

I wish we could have a streetcar. High Street is perfect. It's already 1 in each direction during rush hour, because of the restricted bus lane. Why not put a street car line in there too?? Goes from Convention Center to GV.

Wow color me surprised, I am absolutely stunned Cincinnati pulled it off.
I feel like Columbus has been punished for actually trying to be fiscally repsonsible by attempting fully fund our line from local sources while Cincy only lined up part of it and figured the money would show up later.Well good for them and I hope it works out for them

I seem to recall Mr. Tigertree screeching about the construction being a business killer. ;)Understandably so if he feels that way . I've seen road construction take out retailers before, and even if it doesn't it takes serious time win people back.
and I imagine Taste of Blegium isn't thrilled either to have construction limiting access to the building either, they are excited about what happens when it's done. I doubt they setup there to get construction business. ;)
You can support the streetcar but also be legitimately concerned that lengthy construction can put you out of business before you get to potentially benefit from it. I think that's fair.

http://www.bizjournals.com/columbus/stories/2008/09/22/story5.html?b=1222056000%5e1703145anyway I think restaurants/bar will/would benefit more than retailers from a Columbus or Cincinnati streetcar which was more my point I intended, but that's ok, anything that results in a net gain of foot traffic for the area is a good thing for all of us.

A Short North furniture store might not see new customers looking to drag home a new sofa via public transit, but a place like What the Rock or Tigertree could certainly see increased shopping business.
Anyway, I guess this is all off topic anyway since this is happening in Cincinnati. We should be discussing their shops and stores benefitting. ;)

So, what factors lead to this being passed in Cincinnati while any mass transit investment in Columbus seems like a far off dream that would be immediately squashed? Are pro-transit organizations here just not as well funded/voiced?
