Wow. I'm excited to have an Ikea so close, but I think I'll stay away for the first couple of weeks. I've heard that their grand opening days can be a madhouse.

Has anyone else heard that people are planning on sleeping out for this event?
I mean, I love IKEA. But why? They have a CATALOG! You can order it by mail ANYWHERE in the US.

A lot of people like the social and tactile experience of shopping. To see and feel the merchandise.
Me, I'm not going near that place for months!

They're also giving out some $1000 gift cards and other prizes to the people who show up early.
It's a fun store to visit, and much different than shopping anywhere else in my opinion.
But yeah... we'll wait a few weeks for it to calm down too.

Yeah. That would be why they are sleeping outside. I've seen people sleep outside for a lot less. I'll steer clear for the first two weeks, but I can definitely see a drive to Cincy by early April happening.

IKEA fans expected to flock to new Cincinnati storeSunday, March 9, 2008
BY AMY SAUNDERS
WEST CHESTER, Ohio - Most people don't take two vacation days to attend a Cincinnati-area store opening, Lori Crabtree knows.
But IKEA, which sells everything from modern furniture to Swedish meatballs, is not most stores. Most stores are not the size of six football fields.
And most store-opening events don't begin at two separate times: one Monday morning, when people are permitted to start camping outside IKEA, and one Wednesday, when Crabtree and thousands of other shoppers finally can enter the store they've been wanting in Ohio for years.
"I anticipate it to be a melee, something pretty ridiculous," said Crabtree, 35, of the West Side. "Like the Super Bowl -- but shopping."

Not only that... their background is completely shady - although extremely interesting. (I'm neither pro-, nor anti-ikea. I have quite a few things from their store. I just find their history and structure fascinating.)
The parent company is a registered foundation, meaning none of their profits are taxed. It is also set it up in the Netherlands, where it's easy to get registered as a non-profit foundation and laws are lenient about what you have to report.
As a foundation, that means the family that owns Ikea can't get those profits directly. So, instead, they set up another company - privately held - that would "franchise out" all of the IKEA stores (so the board actually runs each and every store that opens - about 5 people). That company gets all of the franchising fees and the family gets a portion of those sales profits.
THEN, they report a really low amount of pre-tax profits and say the majority of their pre-tax expenses were for "other operating charges", but they won't say exactly what that means (privately held company).
Reports have shown they pay a lot to another group in Luxembourg, which is widely known to also be owned by the family.
As far as taxes go, all in all, their combined companies/foundations only really pay about 3.5% of their reported profits (in 2004, that was roughly 19million euros. Total.).
As far as charitable giving (after all, the parent company is registered as a foundation, right?):
They are officially dedicated to promoting innovations in architecture and interior design.
The charitable organization is larger than the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
The fact is, however, it does very little charitable giving - in 2004, their donations were concentrated on the Lund Institute of Technology in Sweden and totaled $1.7 million in grants compared to the Gates' gifts of over $1.5 billion that same year. Ikea won't really divulge detailed information on their grantmaking - foundations in the Netherlands don't have to report their records.
But they are involved with a lot of international charitable causes, many of which through UNICEF. They also support American Forests. (but how involved are they with any of those organizations?)

I realize that cost is important when shopping for items available at IKEA however you get what you pay for....

We drove down to check out the new IKEA today and hang out with some of our Cincy friends. Was still pretty busy (they had parking attendants directing people on where to park) but a lot of fun. Such an out-of-the-ordinary shopping experience. My problem though is that I really like the way some of their room designs are laid out and I feel like I can't just buy one small item because I'd prefer to completely overhaul the room instead.
Regardless, we picked up a few things. Not a bad drive either. Glad to have one closer than the one in PA.

I usually avoid the sales floor and just shop the warehouse for that reason. I think you find things that fit into what you have already that way.

IKEA flips on Cincinnati solar panels
Business Courier
Date: Tuesday, January 24, 2012, 2:59pm ESTIKEA has plugged in the solar energy system installed on top of its Cincinnati-area store. The 128,000-square-foot photo-voltaic array consists of a 1,026-kilowatt system, built with 4,186 panels. The array, which sits on the world’s leading home furnishing retailer’s West Chester Township store, will produce about 1.3 million kilowatt hours of electricity annually. That is the equivalent of reducing 1,014 tons of carbon dioxide, eliminating emissions of 180 cars or powering 115 homes yearly, according to the company’s news release.
