A few months ago at Congregation Tifereth Israel, Torah reader Ann Bonowitz read out loud to the whole congregation passages from the Old Testement describing homosexuality to be a perversion and a sin punishable by death. Does this make Congregation Tifereth Israel a "hate group?"
Just reading something isn't the same as believing or advocating it. This isn't 1984, you can read pretty much any damn thing you want no matter how you feel about it.
Does she personally believe that being gay is "a perversion and a sin punishable by death?" My guess is no.
Is she advocating for gays to be put to death? My guess again would be no.
Ann read the passages because they are in the Torah. Plain and simple.
Your hypothetical question of "does this make *blank* a hate group?" seems disingenuous, ill-conceived, and not at all an apt comparison to make.
