Four and Six cater to old people and people too lazy to change the channel respectively. As their business is taking in ad revenue for addressing the demographic of their viewer base they are really not in the business of projecting the image of the city for national consumption.
That said, we are quite a hip town compared to those burgs that report on missing cats being found "after an odor was detected under Mrs. Lucinda Miller's front porch last week."
I feel sorry for the perp in that link. Shopping list clearly says she was just getting her life back together.

It's not the media, it's our boring and poor quality thieves.
Maybe if we had dancing thieves like major-metro area New York Ciy, Columbus would be viewed as world class in regards to the media.

Yes, it is a dumb story, but to label NBC4 as a total embarrassment seems to be an overstatement.
When I first saw this post, I expected to learn NBC4 had done something unethical or horrible. They were just doing their job: reporting Columbus news (which has both its good and bad days).

I've always been under the impression that the vast majority of local tv news in every market is a nightly sports, crime and weather report.
I've never though any of our local stations in Columbus were any worse than the rest of the nation. This seems like a very strange story to single out NBC4 about.

Local television news is inherently ridiculous. It's why it makes such good fodder for Hollywood (Anchorman, Bruce Almighty, etc.).
NBC4 is no better or worse than its peers in terms of the type of story that is covered; I would argue, however, that some of the personalities they choose to continue in their employ make NBC4 more difficult to take seriously.

Absolutely correct, Walker!! I'm glad a news station does a story on a meth head who has been stealing the city, county and state blind to support her meth mouth ways. Hey Cheap, if you want "Big Town News for Grown-ups", tune into CNN, MSN, CNBC or Fox news. When it comes to our "Small Town Garbage News", just call me Oscar the Grouch.

I guess I'm confused; however I don't watch local news stations much, but my experience is that they would have one or two "low-key" stories and the rest would be sports and local crime etc. I would think that since these stations are local they therefore attempt to "personalize" the station for the community by running these kinds of stories. No? I would just change the channel when something stupid comes on. Do the other stations do a better job in your opinion?

Personally, I hate NBC4. I can't take them serious and there graphics are HORRIBLE. I feel like I'm stuck with a bunch of old people (which is mean because old people are wayyyyy more interesting) in my opinion. 10TV, ABC6/FOX28 are way better than NBC4. I can take them all seriously. Although, ABC6 does need a new website as well as nbc4 (10tv just got a new one).

I sometimes wonder if there is a conscious effort by the powers that be to keep crime news in certain neighborhoods as quiet as possible.

Yeah, I would say that about all local news. Even national network news. Inherentely, it breaks down like this: maybe one or two honest to god local stories, something off the AP feed, weather, sports, and sometimes an informercial posing as a news story. All told in a short two to three sentence rundown. What... the... hell is that?
A half hour on repeat is not nearly long enough to give context on any given news item. I think Conkite said something like that.
The other thing that bothers me is they'll often repeat the same stories from the night before in the morning. It does leave a bad impression that nothing goes on in Columbus which I know isn't true. There's a lot of culture type stories that are under-reported.

Oh, all the local news programs are a joke-- Cheap's example is just one in a long line of petty crime stories that they tout as "news". Much cheaper and easier than covering our schools or local government.
They are also guilty of using press releases as news pieces. How anyone can claim to be a journalist and just uncritically read an advertisement disguised as a news piece is beyond me.
