Not sure if I chimed in on this one or not... but anyway.
Stick with Columbus as the name of the city. It is what it is, and has been for almost two centuries now. What would people suggest changing the name of the city to, anyhow? Ohio City? Yeah, that's soooooooo creative, and has been done already.
My personal preference would be Ohiopolis, but that's aside from the point.
As the city continues to grow and rise into prominence, people will drop the "Ohio" and simply call it Columbus, if they aren't already doing so. The next largest city with the name, Columbus, Georgia, has roughly a third of our population, and was founded 12 years later.
As a side note, I find it interesting that the official city website is http://www.columbus.gov, which echoes the URL of another prominent city that usually does not go by the "comma state" format--http://www.phoenix.gov. Back here in Ohio, Akron and Canton recently got dot-gov URLs, but strangely opted for http://www.akronohio.gov and http://www.cantonohio.gov. Meanwhile, Cleveland is still using the cumbersome http://www.city.cleveland.oh.us.
In many respects, I'd say we're already ahead of the game.
