CHANGE COLUMBUS' NAME

I read that several manuals of style require Columbus, OHIO in newspapers, etc., and Akron and Toledo are fine without "Ohio". It's one of the biggest reasons why people dismiss us and are surprised that the city is as big as it is. Is our too-common name holding us back?
What say we change the city's name altogether? Seriously. Other cities around the world have done this. Let's just change the name. No more "C-Bus" or Cowtown nicknames will be needed. Think of the publicity, the hoopla, the respect and no more ", Ohio" Good or bad idea? But change it to what?

I'm just tired of explaining, "No, that's Columbus, Indiana, no not in Georgia," when we have 750K people. You'd never hear "San Diego, Arkansas or San Diego, California? You have to admit it's an issue. Generic, generic, generic, boring, just like everyone thinks we are. See?

I think 90% of the time Columbus is first and foremost associated with Ohio.
We just need to be bigger and uniquer and there will be no doubt which Columbus is the best.

Well, if we change our name to something outstanding and one-of-a-kind, then Columbus, GA (the new big Columbus) can continue with the "Is that in Georgia or Indiana" nonsense while we shed our generic title. I seriously doubt if this would ever fly politically-- I can just hear the screams of discontent-- because they're too content.

the next columbus (GA) doesn't come up till 117
I vote we keep our name the way it is, and if anyone says "columbus georgia?" when you say where you're from, simply hit them with a snappy "OHIO, DUMBASS!" and disgustedly roll your eyes to say "as if"
I do that all the time and I feel like it's the best way to build bridges and be an ambassador for our fair city.

A few random thoughts...
1. Portland, Oregon frequently needs the state suffix to differentiate itself from Portland, Maine, but I don't think anyone would argue that it somehow makes the city less cool. Does anyone in either Portland seem to care about this?
2. I never really liked the fact that our city is named after the guy who ushered in hundreds of years of genocide and oppression against an indigenous population.
3. "Many legislators leaned toward 'Ohio City' as something both descriptive and unpretentious. This was an important point to frontier politicians who were as often laughed off a stage as defeated in logical debate..." A local militia officer and tavern owner named Joseph Foos "was also an ardent admirer of Christopher Columbus. There is an enduring local legend - without a shred of documentary evidence to support it - that Foos invited most of the legislature to his inn to discuss the issue of the town's name in depth over liberal quantities of the rather potent house libation. Regardless of how he did it, it is clear that Foos made his point. On February 20, 1812, the Ohio General Assembly selected Columbus over Ohio City as the name of the new town" (Lentz, 2003).

I tend to think that if Portland, OR doesn't have a problem with having its name shared with Portland Maine and the rest-- that's because:
1. It is the leading city of urban planning innovations in America for ideas and implementation.
2. It's surrounded by natural beauty, Mt. Hood for example, and it could be named "Doo Doo, Oregon" and I doubt anyone would care.
Let's face it-- we sit in a forgettable flatlands that stretches to Kansas. Few know or care about us, and too many ridicule the idea of Columbus, OH. So a renaming ceremony is in order. Imagine the Mayor's speech- a new day, a new economy, a new name. Nope, won't ever happen, but thanks for the discussion.

This whole discussion makes your username and location seem awfully ironic.
I vote we go with "The 614" or, failing that, "Columbus@Ohio.com", either of which would place us at the cutting edge of trendy naming.
