my brother's girlfriend is turning 30 in a couple weeks and i decided i'm going to buy her a bottle of champagne. i know nothing about champagne, though, and would like some advice from anyone who does. i only want to spend $25-$30 - can i get something decent for that much money?
also, and this may be a dumb question, if i mega-wrap it in bubble wrap will i have any problem mailing it? they live in chicago. and i would just ask him to go buy it but he's really busy.

Second part 1st : It is illegal to ship alcohol unless you are a registered shipper.
Contact Sam's in Chicago. ( http://www.samswine.com They deliver in Chicago, I am pretty sure. There are also multiple locations from which he could pick up.
A quick search and this popped up :Delbeck NV Brut 29.11$ Good value. Might be more, but it barfed when I tried to sort by price.

Real Champagne like the Delbeck or Feuillatte (and more) are way better* at that price. Plus the real thing says something special that Aussie doesn't, in terms of perception for a gift.
* And for a very good reason : Grapes for Champagne are better at colder climates so the acidity is high and the sugars lower. Australia in general fails on the cold part.

Yeah, my family has had mixed success shipping me wine from California. My mom succeeded bc. the woman at the UPS store said, "So does this box contain alcohol? -- Say no!" My brother failed, I think, because he wanted to fail: I entrusted him with some bottles of Cold Heaven Viognier that he swore up and down he'd send to me, and before I knew it he had sent me e-mail telling me, oh, darn, can't do it, sorry, and by the way, it's really delicious. I could have killed him.

Shipping alcohol to reciprocal states is not illegal. Illinois is a reciprocal state.
Schramsberg is America's best sparkling wine and has been served by the White House since Nixon. Their Blanc de Noirs or Blanc de Blanc can be had for around $30.

Schramsberg is good stuff.
Shipping for permit holder is legal (sort of - it varies by state). Shipping for private individuals is a different matter. What applies to a licensed retailer or wholesaler doesn't translate to a private individual.
Illinois' status is about to change as well, btw.
