LAS VEGAS - Las VegasÃ¢â‚¬â„¢ 31st International Consumer Electronics Show could be one of its last, organizers said Monday, saying they believe they can get a cheaper deal elsewhere. CES, the largest consumer electronic trade show in America, brings in hundreds of millions of dollars in non-gaming revenue to Las Vegas each year. But CES officials told NBC affiliate KBVC of Las Vegas that the price of doing business has gone up every year, so much so that they are considering moving to another city.

we have more non-consumer electronic companies around here, but I think we could provide facilities for this kind of show.

It'd be pretty damn cool to have CES here, but you've got to think the frontrunners are on the west coast (San Fran, LA, San Diego).

I agree, but always figure that it never hurts to discuss and dream. Logistically what is the largest convention Columbus could handle?

I'm not sure if this is correct, but after looking at the Experience Columbus site, the Convention Center has at most approximately 425,000 sq. ft. at its disposal in the Exhibition Halls. I don't think I could reliably estimate human capacity, but it's a lot of booths. Thousands of them. The Ballrooms give added space.
Even so, this type of conference stays near the west coast. We could probably handle the actual conference. Downtown businesses might feel a strain from that many people, though.

The Ah-nold Classic does almost 200k people I believe. Not sure about the CES.

Nice research...just did some too. The Arnold Classic is 167k according to THIS.
I think not having direct flights to asia might be a problem for the CES, but what the heck do I know about putting on a convention?!?!

I've heard discussions about the idea that CES needs to be divided in half... it's apparently getting too large for attendees to take in most of what they need to.
That would double the chance that Columbus could pick up one of 'em.

Keep in mind that the Arnold also uses facilities at the Vets Memorial and Nationwide Arena and shuttles people around all weekend.
So we've got more space than just the main Convention Center.
I think CES would be pretty sweet. We could probably use a few thousand more hotel rooms downtown if we want to really attract more conventions such like this one.

I went to CES 2 years ago and was an exhilerating experience. The Vegas Convention center dwarfs Columbus Convention Center. It would be great if we could host it, but I dont think Columbus is viewed as a hi tech city. :(

I know we have more space, but I think a convention like this would ideally want (and demand) to have everything in one huge spot. Unless CES splits into two separate conferences, we are an afterthought.

Water Main Break Prompts Evacuations

COLUMBUS, Ohio - A water main break beneath the Greater Columbus Convention Center prompted evacuations and the closure of a downtown road Wednesday morning.
A 12-inch water main located under the building broke, according to Rick Tilton of Columbus Public Utilities.
Crews arrived at the scene shortly before 5 a.m. and saw water flowing out of the building.
"Once we started looking at the building itself, it was determined that we needed to evacuate," said Columbus fire Battalion Chief Doug Smith.
The convention center was evacuated at about 5:15 a.m., 10TV News reported.
Smith said water was two feet deep in some places. The water was causing floors to rise and columns to buckle, Smith said.
Power to the convention center was turned off while crews worked to stop the flow of water.
The north and northwest sides of the building were impacted the most, Smith said.
High Street was closed in both directions between Nationwide and Goodale boulevards, police said.
Employees who arrived at the convention center at about 5:30 a.m. to staff a breakfast for a Longaberger sales convention were told not to clock in, 10TV News reported.
An employee told 10TV that she was shocked by the damage she saw inside the building.
Employees expressed concern about how long the convention center would be closed, 10TV News reported.

It's all about spin. We can just say that we are willing to host the first underwater international electronics show in history! And if they complain about water and electronics just say they are missing the "big picture."

I think it's more because they're worried it'll cause the convention center to collapse?

I really hope the CC holds. A collapse could really, really hurt Columbus' visitor attraction value. And where would the Ohio Roller Girls play?

I walked by it on my way into work this morning. They had a lot of the doors open and you can see where the water has just poured outside from the doorways. It didn't look too good.
