I can understand why newspapers don't like depressing stories about the economy. There hasn't been much good news for years.
The headline for this story is just plain wrong. The rate of job recovery is not a "promising pace", it's an anemic and disappointing rate, when compared to the recoveries from past recessions.

Central Ohio jobless rate rose slightly to 7.4 percent in May

Unemployment in central Ohio ticked higher in May by 0.1 percent to 7.4 percent, the first time the unemployment rate for the Columbus region has climbed since January.
Still, the rate is a full percentage point below where it was a year ago.

Ohio’s unemployment rate rose in June, the first increase in nearly two years as the state began to feel the effects of a sluggishness in the national economy.
The rate climbed 0.2 percentage points to 8.8 percent, according to figures released yesterday by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. The number of unemployed rose by 9,000 in the month to 517,000 workers.

Jobless rate steady in region at 8.2%

Ohio’s unemployment picture is a mixed bag these days. Figures that came out yesterday show that jobless rates across much of central Ohio either held steady or dropped last month.
The rate fell in 43 of Ohio’s 88 counties. This would seem to run counter to data released on Friday showing that the state unemployment rate rose 0.2 percentage points to 9 percent in July and that the number of unemployed workers increased.

My neighbor found work within a week after her unemployment ran out.
Is there a figure that shows the % of people unemployed that are off unemployment?
There is also always a slight uptick as students who had jobs go back to school.

Report Paints Dismal Jobs Picture for Ohio

A report being released Sunday says one in 10 Ohioans lost a job over the past decade and workers saw a higher drop in wages than any other state. The State of Working Ohio 2011, from the liberal think tank Policy Matters Ohio, also says about 42 percent of the unemployed last year had been without a job for more than six months – the highest level in 60 years of record keeping.

Hiring outlook not too bad in central Ohio

Central Ohio employers are expected to hire at a steady pace this fall, despite worries about the U.S. economy and European debt issues, according to the Manpower employment forecast released today.
The quarterly survey shows that 15 percent of the companies interviewed plan to increase staffing from October through December, 8 percent plan to cut staff members and 76 percent say they will maintain staffing levels.

Ohio's unemployment rate increases for third straight month

The state’s unemployment rate edged higher last month and is now back at the U.S. rate, according to data released this morning by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.
The Ohio rate climbed 0.1 percent to 9.1 percent in August, the third straight month that the state’s unemployment rate has risen.

Jobless rates in all Ohio counties declined in August

The unemployment rate fell in all 88 Ohio counties last month as manufacturers returned to work from their summer breaks and retailers bolstered staffing for the back-to-school shopping season.
The data released today shows there was some hiring in August, but not more than would normally be expected for this time of year, said Ben Johnson, a state spokesman.

The state’s businesses cut staffing levels last month as in no other month since the depths of the recession.
Led by drops in manufacturing, leisure and hospitality and educational and health services, employment fell by 21,600 in Ohio in September, according to figures released yesterday by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.

Kasich, jobs data tell 2 tales on unemployment

For Gov. John Kasich, author of Ohio’s “Jobs Budget,” the state’s unemployment needle would seem to be heading in the wrong direction.
Ohio’s unemployment rate remained unchanged in September at 9.1 percent, and there were actually 21,600 fewer jobs in the state than there were in August, according to the Department of Job and Family Services.
But as Kasich travels the state highlighting his accomplishments in the eight months through August, he tells a different story about Ohio’s jobs picture. WASHINGTON (AP) -- A summer of modest economic growth is helping dispel lingering fears that another recession might be near. Whether the strength can be sustained, though, is far from clear.

A tale of 2 employment surveys, at a glance

The economy gained only 80,000 net jobs in October, almost half September's gain of 158,000 and the fewest in four months. Yet the unemployment rate fell for the first time since July.
How did the rate fall with such a small job gain? It's because the government relies on two surveys for those figures, and they can diverge sharply from time to time.

Ohio slower to recoup jobs, study says

Restoring all of the jobs that were lost in Ohio during the last recession could take five more years, according to new figures released yesterday that show again how severe the recession was.
Ohio lost about 400,000 jobs in 2008-09, or nearly 8 percent of the state’s work force, and only about 100,000 jobs have come back so far, IHS Global Insight said. The group estimates that Ohio will have 5.5 million jobs in the fourth quarter of 2016, putting employment slightly ahead of where it was in 2007.

Ohio unemployment dips slightly to 9 percent
