Of course, I realize this - my response was do to a couple of postings by gk in a row with a negative slant/angle to them.
I'm trying to figure out the numbers myself on the unemployment. That we've hit a "bottom" makes sense to me, as we're in that post holiday slump period. But to have counties in the same state with such varied numbers is a puzzle --- manufacturing base issue? Counties with traditionally higher unemployment? Wonky number blending?

The bleeding isn't over. Qwest just had another round of layoffs. These are mostly IT jobs that are being lost at Qwest.

And Verizon lays off every 2-3 months, like clockwork. Mostly IT and management staff there. My husband (who was laid off December 2008) still has former co-workers that are being laid off and/or sold off to third party companies to work at the same site without the benefits of the parent company.
Even with significant retraining in IT, he'd still be hard pressed to find a job making half of what he made prior to his layoff. For him, it's prompting a mid-life career change to a totally different area (health care).

It is very rough out there for IT folks. We've discussed some of the reasons on other threads. I won't go there today.

Wondering that myself. Delaware county has more service jobs than Pickaway county, perhaps? Just thinking of Polaris mall...

Ohio jobless rate inches lower

Ohio's unemployment rate dropped another notch in January. The rate dropped to 9.4 percent from 9.5 percent in December, according to the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. The rate has now dropped 10 straight months after hitting 11 percent in March 2010.

Central Ohio employers are planning a big hiring push this spring, the latest sign that an improving economy is starting to translate into more jobs.
Manpower's quarterly employment survey, released yesterday, shows that 22 percent of Columbus-area employers interviewed plan to hire during the quarter. The outlook is the fourth-best among U.S. metropolitan areas.

Employers have added 70,000 jobs so far this year and 101,000 jobs since January 2010, when employment numbers began to improve in the state. Companies added 12,000 jobs in Ohio during May, according to figures released yesterday by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.
