Last year I organized an eight-day trip to a wildlife reserve in the Bolivian Andes for Central Ohio residents. The goal of the trip was to learn more about the area's diverse ecosystem, help protect wildlife and support eco-tourism efforts of the local Quechua communities.
We stayed in a recently built eco-lodge, hiked in cloud forest and saw Andean condors on several occasions. The cloud forest nearby has barely been explored scientifically but already several new animal species have been found. However, like most areas of this kind the reserve is threatened by climate change, road incursions and unregulated colonization. Collaborating with some of the reserve managers in Bolivia I've helped in starting up a non-profit to support the reserve and am planning another trip there this summer in mid-July. This wildlife reserve is not listed in any guide books and we will be only the second group of Americans to visit it. Our website is http://www.yungaperdida.org.
Currently, we are looking for hikers and others interested to join us.
We are holding an informational meeting this upcoming Monday March 14th at the UA library at 7pm. Let me know if you have any questions--my email is yungaperdida@gmail.com
