I was told by my vet that Stella (my cat) needs to have her teeth cleaned to remove tartar build-up that could, over time, lead to infection/bone disease, etc.
Of course, I want to do what's best for my cat, but the teeth cleaning involves sedation and it's going to cost about $400. I'm also wondering if this is all just a bunch of BS...Has anyone else had this done before for their cat and have the costs been that astronomical? (I am assuming the crazy price is for the anesthesia.)

I'd call the OSU vet hispital and ask them if they do it and costs. Since it's a learning hospital the costs are a lot lower.

yep, the crazy price is for anesthesia. I've gotten my cats' teeth cleaned in the past and while the anesthesia after effects aren't any fun for them, I think it helps, especially if there are teeth that need to be removed; just like people, dental problems can create systemic problems if left untreated.

It's true. Also, infections in the gums can travel to other organs. I've only had it done once each on my two older cats. They were probably about 10 years old each time. I don't remember how much it costs, but it is the anesthesia that makes it so expensive.

Amy, if they're bad now, you could always get them cleaned professionally and then clean them regularly on your own. The same types of issues we have with our own teeth are possible with other animals that have teeth, so I wouldn't say THAT's BS, although maybe you're just referring to price/sedation (although, can you imagine cleaning a cat's teeth without it?? haha!).
And I use OSU vet hospital as my regular vet and I wouldn't say that their services are a lot lower. I'd say they're actually very comparable to what you'd pay elsewhere. The reason I go there, though, is because it IS a teaching hospital and I really like the idea of providing the opportunity for up-and-coming vets to learn.

Cats are the same as humans when it comes to getting infections. People can get sick and die when they have tooth infections, as can cats and dogs. Have you giving any thought to Pet insurance? It May be worth looking into.

One more thing I know many people have this problem when feeding their cats and dogs wet food. If by chance you do, use wet food think about switching to hard. It helps clean the teeth. In addition, they sell toothpaste and finger brushes for cats. I brush mine about once a week. misskitty hates me for it but never hurts to try and prevent a issue.

Yeah Amy this can cause some bad side effects with your elder cats down the road. The one thing you cannot do is look back when your cat is super ill and say I wish I would have done that when I had a chance. I believe that my last cat that passed was from me neglecting to make that desision. He was about 15 years old at the time.
Just remember how sweet stella is!

We took our two cats to OSU Vet Hospital for teeth cleaning. It cost us just under $1,000. They cleaned the teeth of our two cats and extracted one tooth from one of the cats. It's expensive!

I will add - if I were going to have this or any major procedure done, I'd go to OSU. In my opinion, nowhere else will you find an operation so prepared for anything, and I really appreciate having that extra peace of mind. Not only that, but if your cat needs to be boarded overnight for this procedure, they are there 24 hours a day, unlike a regular vet that closes up shop at 5:00 or 6:00 to leave all the poor animals there all by themselves all night. I'd hate that part the most!

Add MedVet to this. It's expensive as hell (as is OSU) but I'm pretty sure there's not a better staff anywhere. Extremely capable doctors from the ER to specialists, good techs, and good people liaisons. They've got every bit of equipment and expertise on-site, 24hrs and are very accommodating of visitors during late hours when your lil'un has to spend the night.

He did my cat's teeth for under $100. Sedated and pulled a couple because they were loose. I think the cleaning is like $60 and then the sedation, and then a pain shot for afterwards(because of the pulled teeth), and I also paid for bloodwork run beforehand(which is an extra cost). You ahve to pull loose teeth because they are loose and food can get trapped under them and then they will get infected.
I forget the actual total, but it was nowhere near the posted costs above.
It was a really funny day too because we had a snowstorm that day. So the vet office was closing early and they had me come and pick Liberty up before she had a chance to really wake up. Well, she was so out of it for the rest of the day, just starring at stuff and drooling everywhere, I thought it was hilarious. and a huge plus for no more bad breath!

my only question about cats is: How the hell can an organism evolve that pukes so much?! That cannot possibly be a successfully adaptive trait in any natural environment. Most creatures with issues like that go quickly and quietly extinct. I'm guessing we've messed up the 'housecat' by interbreeding or something dumb like that.

IIRC owls puke compacted balls of the indigestible bits before it hits the rest of their system. Bones, feathers, hair... etc... I can see that would save wear and tear on the system. Looks like an adaptive trait to me.
Cats puke the totally digestible food that has supposedly been specially prepared to be easy on their systems.
It makes no sense to me.
Really, though... if anyone has any suggestions on how to keep the cat from barfing, please send them to catnfiddle. thanks. The vet has the cat on some kind of restricted calorie diet with special food and all that and yet, it still pukes.
