I was watching the stimulus for rail story next to the casino ballot proposal story last night when an awesome idea struck me; we should combine the two most controversial, consistent ballot issues of the last 5 years and have casino trains. You could kill time playing the slots on your commute to Cleveland. The money from the slots would pay for the operation of the train. I am kidding, but this would actually work.

That's a creative idea that I could get on board with.

yeah, you should get this idea on track.

Only problem I can see is that eventually the 3C would merge into the Ohio Hub connecting Ohio to out of state destinations. How would the logistics work with casino trains crossing state lines?

I assume it would work like cruise ships. The whole train would not be a casino, just a few of the cars and they would be non operational in jurisdictions where gambling was illegal. You could even set something up where taxes collected went to municipalities the vehicle traveled through.

Only other issue is that you ultimately lose that space for anything useful (freight, luggage, passengers) when it's non-operational yet are still paying in fuel costs to pull the cars. I would be interested to see what the potential revenue would be from this. If the casino proposal passes, you would have 3-4 casinos. How likely is that people are just going to be burnt out (or tapped out of cash) traveling between casino cities?

Heck of an idea, but would take some work to keep it from going off the rails.

@josh - as someone who used to commute via train with some consistency I don't think it would work. The inside of the train is your sanctuary and if you look around existing commuter trains now most people have laptops out and are working. The racket of a casino would disrupt that process. If it were a separate train car maybe, but I can't see it.
It's not uncommon for casino operators to be forced to have transportation related contingencies built into their plans. If the casino proposal passes and we're going to destroy all the progress we've made in downtown Columbus, the least they could do is throw us a tri-city train.

Haha I want to ride and play table games, then all I have to do is wait till a fast stop or bump and when the chips go everywhere PROFIT!!!!

@jon, it would only be a couple of cars, they could be separated by the dining car to ensure peace, and you could still have the quiet car in the front. This would be instead of, not in addition to other casinos.

They should have a Wii car on the trains. The could charge an extra $20. Wii+Trains=Profit.

Casino Trains? AWFUL IDEA.
(just blowing smoke, i love it.)

Pure genius. Maybe republicans will board this party train to protest this blatant sinfulness and act emotionally scarred...then we can throw them from the train! That would be neat!...!!!

Enough is enough. I've had it with these monkey fightin' casinos on this Monday to Friday train!

No, but the next car down could specialize in Wii massage after dozens of riders' elbows get sore from playing tennis too vigorously.
