June of 2006 I bought a car stereo (Sony) for my gf. Now a little after a year later, the slot loading mechanism will no longer take CD's.
I'll have to call Sony to see if I can get this covered, but are there any local places that do repair?

Honestly a repair (labor and parts) could cost more than simply replacing it. Aftermarket car audio cd players are SO cheap these days it's insane.
Check Alpine or Pioneer Premier for quality. I'd stay away from Sony and JVC for mobile audio.
there is a radio repair place behind the speedway gas station at weber and 71. the sign says AC delco stereo repair, I'm not sure if it is only AC delco or if they service all stereos. the address would probably be Silver Drive.
and last time my car was broke into and player stolen my insurance sent me to this store on Morse Road across from Northland mall that was excellent with installing my current radio. I could find the name if you are interested.
stay away from best buy, one you get ripped off, two, the installation was poor. when i later took my doors apart I found a couple things they did incorrectly and some stuff they broke on my door paneling when installing some speakers.

Yeah, you're probably right, I'm just annoyed it broke after a year of light use.
When you say after market, what do you mean exactly?
You should definitely call THESE GUYS
They look like total professionals. :D

I mean not original equipment to the car. Ex: You put a Sony cd player in a Honda.
Here's a nice Pioneer Premier unit for $128. Comes with the iPod direct connect, which will control and display an iPod's library from the deck itself.
You can't go wrong with the Pioneer Premier stuff.
typically when a stereo presents an error it throws a code up on the screen. if you are going the repair route, know the error code if it gives one and model # of the unit when calling technicians
did you ever fix your AC/vent issue in your car?

Derp, thanks for that qualification.
did you ever fix your AC/vent issue in your car?
Yes. Well, someone fixed it for me. $200, all said and done.
I know some guys who can help you install speakers:

Man, I remember when the only way to get a Pioneer Premier deck for that cheap was to get it hot... that's crazy cheap.
And yeah, their stuff is really great.
my experience with car stereos. listed in order of least liked to greatest liked
AC Delco - OEM stereo for Pontiac and GM
something will eventually break on it and you will get error messages. CD player stopped working so I installed a JVC CD/mp3 player
JVC- junky looking, didn't really like it at all and was happy when it got stolen out of my car
Sony- it is in the bronco, it's ok. something finally happened with it to where it won't pick up radio stations anymore, so you can only listen to CDs in the Bronco
Pioneer- great unit, never had one problem with it(it's been about 3 years). I want to put another pioneer in the bronco now.
Sorry to dig this back up but I have a question.
So I recently got my new Grand prix :D and it has a factory cd player in it.

I noticed something odd On the screen it will scroll the name of the radio station and the song that is playing every once in a while.
But non-stop it scrolls Ricart auto sale Ad's no joke all the time never anything else? WTF I already can't stand his TV commercials but now I must endure this written across my car radio WHY GOD ?
How does he do this is it some sort of special advertising that only he knows about? Is there any way to make it go away lol ?
I can't help you, but that sucks! Perhaps look in the manual. You can program some display screens to display whatever you want. If you bought the car from Ricart then that's what they probably did. If so, just change it or turn it off through the menu.
maybe disconnect / connect the battery?

Let me guess: you're tuned into CD101. Ricart advertises on the RDS message protocol. Lately, I've only seen the station ID, no ad, no music info on there.
if you do that be sure to have to code to get back into the radio. if you get locked out due to the theft prevention the display I think will show LOC for locked out. although you should have a code anyway. your battery will probably be disconnected at one time or another. You can always call the dealer for the code or help with the display.
I was driving a company car couple days ago and I can't remember what station it was on, but I know it wasn't CD101, and it had Ricart ads on there too.
There should be an option to turn that feature off (displays the call letters, artist, and song name). He advertises on 99.7 the Blitz too. The MID on my car allows me to push a button labeled "RDS" to turn it off. Your GM radio should have the same option somewhere.

maybe disconnect / connect the battery?Going to try but I must first get the code.

Definitely reading into this.
I just found it so strange and weird that of all dealers that one. If I ever have a dream about this dealershit I am going to sue for emotional distress. Only kidding lol
i can't remember the last time i listened to Columbus radio. sometimes when in B's car, but she was a dj and has a shit ton of music. and now that I installed the XM in her car i don't see it ever getting turned back on cept for npr or something.
