Wow. Victim blaming... and who is being ignorant and uneducated here?

Luckily we only have a property loss from our cars and porches up here to the North of Campus as far as I've heard, but I have lady friends who live to the east of high who are scared shitless to walk home or to school in the evenings or early mornings. They aren't naive- in fact they are downright paranoid and suspicious of everyone that gets near them on their commute (more so than girls are already taught to be). But what are they supposed to do?! Not go to class? Curl under a table in the library and sleep there every night? Students these days are very busy, it's usually hard to see your friends at all, let alone schedule all your walks to and from campus together (not that that would actually do much good). So BZZZZZZZZZZT, try again. The correct answer here is "Get more police/security patrolling the area."

Okay, I take back some of what I said on that post from a few weeks ago. My guess is that the vast majority of the students are very mindful of the crime in the university district and are being cautious. I mentioned before that a larger police presence would help. I do get the same security warning emails that the students get and SOME of the crimes have taken place late at night east of campus. Avoiding that, seems to me, would help, though I understand more needs to be done.

Rus, I don't have a solve all answer but I do agree with Asch who said "The correct answer here is "Get more police/security patrolling the area." This is a good starting place. If OSU can pay one Officer $84,000 in overtime!! They can better spend that money buy hiring more Offices and not pay out OT. They would get more for the money. Who in the hell is running the OSU Police Department anyways? I bet OSU has more Coaches on staff then Police Offices.

These students aren't getting robbed on campus. They are usually in the jurisdiction of the CPD. More Osu Police officers will solve nothing.

Police: Man With Gun Arrested Near Ohio State Campus

Stats Show Decrease In Campus-Area Crime, But Some Disagree

The latest crime statistics from The Ohio State University show campus crime is on the decline, but some students say the numbers do not tell the whole story. In an agenda for information to be presented at a university meeting, OSU's crime statistics revealed a 45 percent decline in assaults between October and December of 2011. Burglaris decreased 33 percent and robberies declined 77 percent. The numbers are based on crimes reported.

That could be useful, but from the article:

Skrinak said she is also skeptical that all the crimes that occur are actually being reported.

Mike Newbern is president of the student group Buckeyes for Concealed Carry. He said the latest numbers should be put in context because most students leave campus for winter break in December, so crime naturally always decreases during that time of year.

Either of those could be factors as well.

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Columbus and Ohio State University police released a first draft of a jurisdictional agreement on Monday that could help the campus-area become safer.

According to the draft, Ohio State University Police would be able to make arrests outside of campus and charge violators for felonies and misdemeanors.

I assume that the Campus police are pretty well trained and have had extensive background checks etc. If so I think this is a good thing with a potential to impact crime up there. I would assume this mostly effects precinct 4 which is pretty much the entire campus area and at times fairly taxed.

Would the campus police actually patrol the off campus area or would it be more about pursuit of suspects from campus?

Precinct 4 looks like a very busy area indeed.

Big difference in that OSU Police are actually police. This is really no different than mutual aid agreements between Fire/EMS services across town.

I think this may be more than mutual aid if they actually set up patrols off campus. If they do I think it will help improve student safety and is a win for the area.

Could they not pursue suspects off campus before? I doubt that was ever the case, that someone could be robbed on campus and the police would just have to stop and slap their knees that another one got away as the robbers crossed High St.

Assuming this means regular patrols, this could have a huge impact. OSU has tons of money to add as many patrols as they want. It would probably be worth the money to them to boast to parents how safe the OSU community is.

Side note - it is scary to think how strained Precinct 4 must be on OSU football/riot days.

Reminds me of when I lived on campus and I overheard a cop telling another one not to intervene at a wild block party, but just make sure the students stay contained to the area.

Seems like a reasonable course of action. Why start a riot when you know the kids will eventually get tired and pass out somewhere? No need to end up on youtube firing tear gas at people's children.
