Call for Artists: Downtown Columbus Public Realm Enhancements
CALL FOR ARTISTS: Issued August 10, 2010
APPLICATION DEADLINE: September 30, 2010, 5:00 PM
DOWNTOWN COLUMBUS PUBLIC REALM ENHANCEMENTS
The Capital Crossroads Special Improvement District (SID) is undertaking a project to enhance the public realm within the SID (map attached). The projects, which will be implemented over the next several years, are based on the Downtown Columbus Public Realm Enhancement Study, prepared by MSI Design and the SID in 2009. The study includes a wide variety of improvements, including; screening of parking lots; improvements to Lynn-Pearl Alleys, which will include gateway entrances and an art installation at the intersection of the alleys; bus shelter upgrades; street planters along major thoroughfares, and pedestrian-friendly design for Nationwide Boulevard. Projects will be implemented as funding becomes available. In addition to the enhancements outlined in the study, the City of Columbus received a grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to create 294 bicycle parking spaces within the SID by October, 2012.
Involvement of Artists
The SID has made the commitment to involve Ohio artists in each of these projects to engage the state’s large and diverse creative community; to raise the level of design and quality of the enhancement projects; and to make them distinctive additions to the city’s public realm. The selected artists will be part of a design team with MSI, an urban planning design firm located in Columbus, which is under contract to the SID to oversee the design and installation of the public realm enhancements. The role for the artist is to develop the concept that will be translated by MSI into working/shop drawings for use by the fabricator.
In order to be eligible for consideration, professional practicing artists must be living and working in Ohio.
Artists are invited to submit qualifications for any/all of the projects described below. A “short list†of qualified artists will be created. Capital Crossroads Special Improvement District will select artists from this “short list†as projects are funded and implemented.
Artists may submit qualifications for only one or multiple categories of projects. The qualifications for each and the application process are in the PDF below:
