I'm moving to Columbus (actually Westerville) in 2 weeks, and I'm not much of a driver - I usually take cabs or other public transportation to get around my current city. Are cabs plentiful/reliable there? Do they charge by distance or by time? and if anyone knows, what's the average rate?

Cabs+Westerville=not very realistic. Cabs are plentiful, I suppose, when called, but to get pretty much anywhere from Westerville in a cab is going to get pretty cost prohibitive.

What about Inga Taxi in Westerville? Does anyone have experience with them? I'm not looking to taxi to downtown or anything, at most just a few miles.

WEll, if you're taxing from Westerville to Westerville, it'd probably be an affordable option then.

i forget exactly how they charge. i think its like 2.50 or something when you get in, then $N for each 8th of a mile they take you...
id look into getting a scooter or something :D

Westerville is bike friendly--street and paths. You do not see many cabs in Westerville---very uncommon unless it is late late on Friday or Saturday nights and they are preventing DUI's. Are you an Otterbein Student? I would catch rides from friends and take the bus around Westerville....so much more practical and realistic than a cab up there.

Maybe I'm mistaken, but in every city except Columbus, don't cabs usually turn their rooftop "for hire" light on when they're available, and turn the light off when they're hired?
In Columbus, the lights are always on. I can't tell you how many times I've tried to hail a cab because the light was on, only to have them breeze by with a full crew.
I even asked a driver about this once and he said, if my car is on, the light is on and I have no way to turn it off, other than turn the car off. It seems like a pretty simple system to adopt.
Am I the confused one, or are the Columbus cabs?

yeah enzo, westerville is very bikable. they have a lot of bike lanes and there are paths that go all around the city. taking cota from westerville is a bad idea. last time i checked to take it to work from clintonville i had to leave at 430 am and i wouldn't arrive until 715! also, when i lived in the old part of westerville i could walk most places i wanted to go, because it was on the main drag.

For awhile I had no choice but to take cabs and use the cota. My experience was in Dublin I found out quickly that by calling a cab for a ride took a very long wait. Though when the cab finally showed up for future rides if I'd call hours in advance and "reserve" a cab for a certain pickup time and drop off, the driver was almost always on the dot. I was told that this is the easiest procedure if you will for any local area in the burbs.
Cota in the outlying areas are pretty reliable but it seems to be only during rush hour for the most part, and takes forever to get downtown.
I have also had very good experience with german village/ airport taxi if you call ahead for a specific time pick up. They would be rarely more than 10 mins late from the specified time and usually the driver will give you their card for "request me for next trip"

YES, it's the most annoying thing ever! When I first moved here I thought I was losing my mind, but then I eventually figured out it was a Columbus thing. It made for some exhausting arm-flailing incidents at 2:30am :)

Are you hoping to get around Westerville or to come downtown? I do have to say that I was recently in Philadelphia and was blown away by how clean and nice the cabs are. I haven't had much luck with consistency with cabs in Columbus (in the Short North area)-- sometimes you call and they never show up, sometimes you catch a nice one, and once I caught one where the door was practically falling off. I echo what someone else wrote... get a scooter :)
