This really sucks...

This really sucks...
Sad day. I remember the place when Libby owned it. I spent many an hour there and at King Ave Coffee House, studying and drinking coffee.
Ouch.
Joyce & the Byzantium crew provided the beads and helped string them on Surly Girl's big chandelier. Every time I look at that chandelier I'm so proud to point to them. I can't imagine the neighborhood without Byzantium.
Sorely missed Columbus institution.
there was just a front page article in the Short North Gazette that described the history and made things sound positive going forth.
Joyce and the Staff of Byzantium will be missed within the craft community. They were especially gracious in supporting Craftin' Outlaws from the first event back in 2005.
My husband made me a necklace days before christmas the first year we were dating from Byzantium. They helped him pick out all the beads and showed him how to string it all together. A long time Columbus staple will be missed.
They sold poppers too right? The Short North boys will be bummed.
From the sound of things, their landlord is/ has been bad news for the Short North. What a shame.
is it the same owner as little brothers/liquid?
Sad day for the Short North. It seems to be losing its eclectic fringe. :(

I hope dude is losing his shirt on that vacant space.
Same here. On the flip side I do think if someone is reading this and considering opening a business in the Short North, the Wood Companies are some of the BEST landlords I've encountered anywhere. As area pioneers they also care A LOT about the neighborhood, unlike this dude.
That's really sad. I have fond memories of going over to the old King Ave. location growing up, and later rummaging around the new location upon realizing that (1) had a girlfriend and (2) should probably get her a present ;-) I also remember getting a little bit of a jolt when I first learned any the Byzantine Empire and recognized the name.
If it's a landloard issue, I wonder why they're closing down completely instead of moving. It sounds like they have the customer base to stay afloat somewhere. Although I imagine the stress of something like this happening could also be demoralizing enough to call for retirement.
In any case, the loss of another great business from that stretch of High St. is not a great sign. The fact that the same person seems to be responsible for so much of it just makes me angry.
I just mentioned this to a friend and she would like to know if anyone knows of a similar store with a focus on jewelry and beadwork in Columbus?
It really stinks that this is happening so suddenly, I think a lot of their regulars would have tried to help them out/push them to stay in business. If it is a rent issue, I am sure there are plenty of other less expensive neighborhoods that would love to have a wonderful store such as this. I am not too craftsy, but everytime I was in there the staff was very friendly and I felt a real sense of community.
"The fact that the same person seems to be responsible for so much of it just makes me angry."
It's just not news until it's been erroneously speculated about on the internet. ;)
It's not a "fact". Joyce wants to retire, she's entitled. It's a huge loss for the artistic community, but she's definitely earned her retirement more than most people have.

I knew as I typed it that using the word "fact" would get me in trouble at some point ;-)
And, of course, she's absolutely earned her retirement. It's not the store closing that's angry-making, it's the theoretical forced closing of the store that is.
In other sad news, the folks at Baker's Acres Concrete Jungle are considering shuttering their store as well :(
Noooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
Well that clears up a lot of the speculation. I hope that something as diverse moves into that space but I am not holding my breath. I hope the owner has a nice, well earned retirement.
I'm on their mailing list, and shop there frequently, but didn't get an invite to the sale.
Will I need a special red invite to go to the store next week? If so...where can I get one?
