I've been thinking about "Buy Nothing Day" and think that the overall premise is a bit misguided.
Instead of "Buy Nothing" - people should be encouraged to "Buy Local" and "Buy Handmade". I've seen several threads on the CU board lately about shopping/buying locally, especially around the holidays. If we "buy nothing" then all our buddies who make cool things and own their own businesses/restaurants, etc. will suffer. We don't want that!
I know there's a general "Buy Local" campaign here in Columbus (I think - I've seen the stickers). Is there anything in the works for a "Shop Local/Shop Handmade" week? That would be awesome. Maybe we could organize something like that to raise awareness about the benefits of helping our local economy grow.
