Pardon for what?
Posted 3 years ago # -
misc crimes while in office (there has been much speculation). I'm not saying I think he's done anything wrong, just curious if he could do it and if so, why didn't Nixon?

The President can only pardon federal offenses, and cannot pardon an impeachment.
The reason that Nixon didn't pardon himself, and that Bush will probably not pardon himself, is that in order to accept a pardon, the person being pardoned has to admit they were/are guilty of the crime they are being pardoned for.
In Nixon's case, Ford pardoned Nixon for any crimes he may have committed. So if Nixon would have been tried for anything then he could have admitted guilt and accepted the pardon at that time. But since the admission of guilt is a necessity, pardons are usually reserved for people who have already been sentenced and/or served their punishment.

Scooter Libby comes to mind, I suppose.

I heard on NPR a few months back tha Bush said he wouldn't pardon Libby. Dollars to donuts, Cheney self destructs before any charges are filed against him. I think he may be guilty of vampirism, and not in the cool modern way.

Bush doesn't need to pardon Libby. The prez already granted Libby clemency and commuted his sentence.

Ah, that's why there won't be a pardon.

There are still quite a few republicans that need pardons, though. :D

Yes, do so, and pay close attention to all the wild enthusiasm his proposal generated among Democrats.
Steny Hoyer pigeonholed Kucinich's first impeachment attempt and almost none of the Democratic Caucus criticized him for it. Outside of truly blind ideological zealots (e.g., the Kucinitwits), there is no enthusiasm for impeaching the president or trying members of the administration for war crimes.
I will be absolutely stunned if Obama brings such retaliatory measures out of the woodwork after taking office. I'd almost be delighted. I can think of no stronger spark for a conservative renaissance and no better way to kill a nearly unlimited number of hours that Congress might otherwise have devoted to liberal legislation and regulation.

Are you really suggesting that after such a grand failure of bank deregulation that you'd oppose Congressional action increasing regulation? Regulation is what governments are for.

So there is actually a bunch of legal wrangling over that Libby commuting of his sentence as opposed to Pardoning. I honestly don't remember how it all works as that is like a lifetime ago in terms of this current administration but essentially, if Bush had pardoned Libby then Libby would've been compelled to testify against Bush/Cheney whereas by leaving things the way they did it somehow left a protection against that. I'll have to see if I can find some of the news from that time.
Our laws are weird sometimes and that was why Libby won't be pardoned.
As much as I'd love to see these crooks get sent to jail (bush/cheney/et al) I agree with the above statements that Obama won't go after them. If a successful civil action (taken by citizens) happens then that would be great but I doubt that will happen either.

I wouldn't hazard a guess yet with Lieberman, I mean, sure...he's keeping his seat, that's not up to anyone. I think there's still a good chance he'll lose his committee spots and possibly even the party caucus though.
As to Kucinich, he's been doing this for a while now, and it's worthless.
IF, at some point, irrefutable evidence comes up that Bush or Cheney or both blatantly and knowingly falsified evidence that led us to war...different story. Then, you owe it to the several thousand U.S. servicemen who've lost their lives to pursue that. I doubt very much that will happen though.

I know people wanted to see Leiberman crucified. And the message that sends is this: Do not think for yourself, do not go against your own party or we will destroy you. Hello Liberal Fascism.

Speaking for myself, H, I really and truly have no issue with Lieberman not supporting the Democratic presidential ticket.
Saying the things he did about Obama on the campaign trail and delivering a keynote speech at the Republican Convention while caucusing with the Democrats...different story all together.
