I was really bummed that I could not coordinate life to make the trip out, but after reading the the LIFE & ARTS and some other news feeds about a suicide and the arson setting the burning man on fire 4 days early....what are people thinking?

I don't know... What happened to BM is what happens to... well just about every avant-garde annual festival or event. It starts with a small group of people who get the concept and are really involved and believe in it... and then over time more and more people come, some with the same attitude of participation and others who go for what they think it is until eventually it's over run. I have a friend who went, she said it was great in the beginning when it was just the event organizers and the artists setting up, but at the end especially the night of the burn it was a free-for-all of drugs and people trying to get laid in the spirit of fo-pagan-spiritualism.
I think Paul Addis (the guy in the mug shot) is playing Loki, and re-directing what he feels the spirit of the festival is supposed to be.

I don't know if the events are related, but this is the first time anyone has deliberately killed themselves at BM.

Of particular note in the suicide:
Pershing County coroners are investigating the scene and preparing to remove the body. Pirtle said the man was hanging for two hours before anyone in the large tent thought to bring him down. "His friends thought he was doing an art piece," Pirtle said.

I'd depends on exactly how he was hanging, and if it was planned (meaning he was planning on doing a performance art piece).
See, this is why people need spotters. If that cat had his friends to follow safety precautions maybe that wouldn't have happened. Without more info on exactly what happened I personally find it hard to place blame. But agreed his friends should have been more observant/mature enough to realize what he was doing was dangerous and kept an eye on him.
I don't think he was the first person to die or get injured doing a performance though, if he was performing that is.

For those interested, the theme camp Comfort and Joy in which the dude who killed himself, killed himself, made a statement.
On the morning of Thursday, August 30th a young man from Colorado chose to end his life in the rafters of a public tent at Comfort & Joy.Though he was unknown to us, in the wake of his passing we're learning from those who knew him that he was creative, kind, unconventional and smart, and that he was regarded with affection by many.
His final act, committed in solitude, has one lasting effect as it brings us together to mark his passing. To all who have offered our camp their sympathy and support during this time, thank you. To all who knew him, please accept our sincere condolences.
It is estimated that there was an one hour interval between the last visit to the tent by a camp member, and the discovery of the body by a second camp member. It is believed that the tent was unoccupied during this time, and that there were no witnesses to the suicide.
One other individual, not associated in any way with the camp, was in the tent at the time the body was discovered. Emergency personnel were immediately contacted by camp members. Authorities responded within minutes and closed the scene upon arrival....

The show _Malcolm in the Middle_ did an episode about Burning Man, and I swear, it was the funniest thing I have ever seen in my entire life. If you have an interest in Burning Man, this episode is well worth seeking out.

Did you actually read any of the ideas??? So far...just to recap...we are dressing up like fuzzy bunnies and burning down BoMA while making s'mores over the burning ashes.
Maybe you can get the vegan streetcart to provide snacks...
