Press Release:
Buckeye Vodka Tops Ohio Spirits Brands On First Anniversary
April 5, 2012 - DAYTON, Ohio - April 2012 marks the one-year anniversary for Dayton-based Buckeye Vodka. Owned by Crystal Spirits LLC, Buckeye Vodka topped the charts by selling over 4,200 cases in its first year, making it the best selling spirit produced by an Ohio craft distillery.
“We have a lot to celebrate after one year,” said Jim Finke, CEO of Crystal Spirits LLC. He continued, “Our mission has been to create a premium vodka at a reasonable price that supported the Ohio economy. By all measures, we believe we’re on the right track.”
Since hitting the shelves in April 2011, the company cites a $1.08 million contribution to the Ohio economy through purchases and related tax revenue. Additionally, Buckeye Vodka credits its marketing efforts in areas around the state for helping maintain or create jobs in Ohio, though total figures were not disclosed.
“As our team talks with restaurant owners, bartenders, and consumers, we hear a very consistent message. People seem genuinely surprised by the great taste and smooth
finish of Buckeye Vodka. They love the story behind the brand too. They like that we are
a family owned business; that we’re from Ohio and that we distill and bottle each small
batch ourselves right here in Ohio. I think they really appreciate the affordable price as well,” Finke commented.
Finke appreciates Ohio consumers for recognizing the value in the Buckeye Vodka brand. Last November, Buckeye Vodka earned a Gold Medal in an international competition conducted by the Beverage Testing Institute (BTI) for its exceptional quality, as well as a “Best Buy” award for extraordinary value. A 750ml bottle of Buckeye Vodka retails for under $20 across the state, while a 1.75L bottle sells for under $35.
The company sees opportunity for significant growth in its second year. Finke expects sales to double, helped in part by a recent change in Ohio law. Ohio HB 243, which took effect March 22, 2012, now allows Contract Liquor Agencies across the state to host up to five spirit tasting events per month.
“Tasting events will allow consumers to try new brands in the store before making a purchase,” said Robinson C. Cooper, vice president and general manager of Southern Wine and Spirits of Ohio, distributor of Buckeye Vodka. He added, “We expect this to be especially beneficial to Buckeye Vodka, which tastes as smooth and crisp as more expensive national brands.”
