Totally agree with you:
I guess generally I'm just more in the camp of "let's do a whole bunch of cool small things every day of the year" rather than "let's do one big awesome thing on one day". I don't like seeing a whole bunch of eggs in one basket.
Why does having one big event a year prevent having a whole bunch of little events the rest of the year?
Downtown retailers, if they existed, would see a rise in income during the week of the race. The new Hills market would probably see an uptick in sales of prepared foods, as well a general groceries. Each car has a rather large team of people that are accustomed to traveling throughout the year. I'm sure most of them aren't the type to eat out every meal, and would search out a grocery store for snacks, drinks and other daily food needs. There will be media people travelling in that would also have those same needs. Fans would be in town for the event, and would potentially bring family members would would not have the same sort of passion for auto racing. They would probably go out and shop at various locations, if they were available.
This wouldn't be a one off event like Red White and Boom. This would be a week long event, with a large amount of other events that would take place around the race.
