true. if the water is kept in the air it cannot leak into the ground. Perhaps a series of fountains, perhaps 20 or so, could be set up to "juggle" the water and keep it off the ground!

Like some other posters here, I tend to think this new fountain is a bit "off" design-wise. I recall clearly back during the planning stage, that there was a lot of effort expended to have a design competition and from that selecting this design as the best choice. There were some accomplished artists, sculpturs, and others in the running. While the suggestion to tear it down and start over seems less than totally out of line, I think that once the thing is completed, the pond is (finally) refilled, and the fountain operates for awhile and sort of settles into its setting, we may find it fits in a lot better than it seems to at the moment. Assuming it's running by next ComFest, take a look at it after a few ComFest beers and all might be OK. Though we might have to wrap it in tie-dye, like we do Mr. Goodale.

With a title like OSHA Investigator, shouldn't you be busy burdening the manufacturing sector with the incredibly underwhelming and expensive transition to the globally harmonized system of HazCom set to leave the OMB next month? I mean, you guys only worked on it for like 6 years and still came up with a system that is the exact opposite of existing warnings like the NFPA diamonds.

I can appreciate people's misgivings and frustration with the fountain. It's not perfect but, the Friends of Goodale park are doing their best. Please keep in mind that this is a volunteer run organization, uncompensated, whose sole purpose is the stewardship of the park. I can't say enough good things about the FOGP, and the dedicated leadership that has selflessly poured their life and soul into the park.

I'd like to challenge those critical of the fountain/pond to take the opportunity to get involved, take and make the changes you want to see as opposed to complaining about the best efforts of others. http://www.goodalepark.org for more info.

Can someone speak to the source of the money for the fountain/improvements? Wasn't most of it donated?

Sometimes the BEST efforts of others doesn't cut it and you must go above and beyond. Seems like huge a waste of time and money no matter if they were donated or not when the park could use energy and money devoted to actual upkeep and not just a sad eyesore that was an attempt to have a visual aesthetic added to the park. This is a sad fail no matter who you point the finger at in the long run.

Over the last few months the Friends of Goodale Park Project Steering Committee has been working with representatives from Columbus Recreation & Parks and private consultants to address the leak in the Goodale Park pond that was identified following the refilling of the pond last fall. Initially a layer of the bentonite stone (clay-coated stone) was applied to the work area surrounding the fountain. The pond was then partially filled utilizing the existing well pump; normally used to maintain the pond's water level. After reaching a suitable depth, the well was turned off and the water level was observed closely.

Unfortunately the water level was observed to drop, although slowly, over the next week. That observation has demonstrated the presence of a leak in an area different and/or larger than initially considered. The Friends of Goodale Park share our disappointment with the community and fully appreciate public frustration with continued delay of this project, which has been so strongly supported by individual and community donations.

At present we are in discussion with our partners, including Columbus City Recreation & Parks, to find a resolution that will seal the pond and make the fountain fully operational; both the electrical and plumbing systems are fully installed with only final inspection and fine-tuning remaining.

Again, Friends of Goodale Park shares any and all frustration with the delayed completion of this project but are hopeful that our friends and neighbors will recognize the long-term rewards and returns that this project will bring to our park and community.

Can someone just go out and knock the stupid fountain down while it would still be easy? Or maybe paint the bricks in invisibility paint.

Just go sit out by the mud pit for an hour or so and you will overhear every single person who walks by say something to the tune of "god, that thing is huge and ugly. who came up with this?"
