If you haven't already heard, in the past few days, Rush Limbaugh has weighed in on the controversial womans health care mandate of religious institutions offering free contraceptive coverage in their health care plans to employees and students. He does so by alienating and personally attacking a Georgetown University third year law student, Sandra Fluke, who spoke out to congress on behalf of women on the need for the measure. She did this after being denied a voice at the Oversight Committee on the issue, but later Nancy Pelosi invited her to spek in front of congress.
Rush calls her a slut and a prostitue for wanting health care providers to give women free contraceptive care. He specifically says:
She wants to be paid to have sex,” Limbaugh continued. “She’s having so much sex she can’t afford the contraception.”
"She wants to be paid to have sex” - and - “She’s having so much sex she can’t afford the contraception”
Of course, no where in the transcript from her speech to congress does she talk about contraceptive coverage as a strict means of birth control, rather as a medicine for medical problems. Her transcript is here.
Although Rush's comments are all over the internet, a summary of the incident can be read here.
I haven't paid much attention to Rush, I'll be honest. I have a problem with blatant disrespect and lying from people that have influence over the masses. This man should not be allowed easy access to public broadcasting. Not only does he not apologize for his comments, but he reinforces the negativity of them, and mocks the responses from his victims supporters. It's as if he is a 6 year old boy trapped in a 60 year old body. It could almost be presented as child labor, letting the man make money off such panderings.
If you feel passionate about doing something to make him accountable for his actions, and move to rid him from the airwaves, I have provided a list of his sponsors - the financial trunk of his show, for which would not be possible without their financial contributions. Call or write these sponser and let them know you will specifically refuse to purchase their goods or services solely because they financially support The Rush Limbaugh show. Please pass along as well so others may contribute in the boycott if they wish.
