With regards to the movement started by Pilsner, I thought it would be prudent to start a thread to name every local company that profits from BP and make sure they not only go into the red but fail. I will start it out.
Every local gas station
All logistics companies
The Limited
Nationwide
Grange
Etc.
I am sure someone can name others.

Chrome isn't bad, although the flash plugin crashes more than a little old lady driving a prius through a farmers market.
As to boycotting big oil, better not do that while wearing anything other than fair trade organic cotton. Plastics and polyester blends are the sambenito of the big oil heathens, doncha know.

I was just about to mention that plastic is made from petroleum, but rus beat me to it.
However, there really isn't a product on the shelf of the big retailers that hasn't benefitted from some relationship with "big oil". And we can see the products on the shelves because of coal.
So. It's tricky.

"Boycott all local business that has big oil ties"
beyond the obvious grammatical difficulties... good luck actually doing this. I'm not sure it's actually possible on a meaningful level. Even, for example, Snowville Creamery, which is arguably a fine and very responsible local ohio business, uses plenty of gas/oil.
If you only want to include businesses that are NAMED after "big oil" companies, that's an easy shorthand, but not wholly intellectually honest. The truth is that cheap oil is in EVERYTHING and has so fundamentally changed the way every product you buy/eat/drink is created and delivered that there will be no getting around it until we as a society actually put in the hard WORK that will be required to find a replacement, and that replacement might not be as cheap as oil appears to be (because externalities such as ecological devastation are not printed on the pump.)
Hot air and symbolic gestures are not a substitute for that work, and it WILL be difficult, but it will have huge long term pay off.

So true, it is difficult to isolate the assholes like myself from the rest. But, the whole "sarcastic" point of the thread was to point out a lot of what you stated; almost all of our life experiences at this point are tied to "big oil" and boycotting such things would be almost futile.

I think this is the stupidest thread I've ever seen here at CU. BP is a criminal organization. Most people understand we need oil. But we don't need companies such as BP recklessly handling it. It's clear that BP considers the fines from "accidents" as just a cost of doing business.
I thought conservatives/libertarians believed in accountablity and being responsible!!! Oh that's right, corporatists don't believe that corporations should be held accountable.

In the last three years, according to the Center for Public Integrity, BP accounted for “97 percent of all flagrant violations found in the refining industry by government safety inspectors† including 760 citations for “egregious, willful†violations (compared with only eight at the two oil companies that tied for second place). Hayward’s predecessor at BP, ousted in a sex-and-blackmail scandal in 2007, had placed cost-cutting (and ever more obscene profits) over safety, culminating in the BP Texas City refinery explosion that killed 15 and injured 170 in 2005. Last October The Times uncovered documents revealing that BP had still failed to address hundreds of safety hazards at that refinery in the four years after the explosion, prompting the largest fine in the history of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
