Does anyone remember a place in the Short North called Bono Pizza?

Bill and Peggy Yerkes were not so sure anyone did so they tested the waters on Friday April 17th using one of Bill's Mobile Bono Pizza Ovens.

Bill and company set up shop in front of the former Cowtown Pizza location at Northwest and 3rd in Grandview.

Apparently people did remember, to the point that there were more people than pizzas. There were no pizzas available after about 7:30 PM. Bill and Peggy reported many regulars showed up as well as some new faces.

I was a late arrival. In two acts of absolute charity, Roland gave me a slice of his San Rolando and Peter slid a slice from the Fighting Librarian onto my plate.

The pizzas passed the Roland test so all is good in the world. There will be another Bono appearance at the same location on Friday April 24th. After that - things are a bit hazy. Maybe the oven will be parked in front of Club Roland later in the summer.

For Bono Cultists, no Bono trip would be complete without a little Jeni's ice cream to wash things down. The Grandview Jeni's was a short .4 mile walk away. The Foodcast crew brought back two pints to finish out the night right.

I scored the absolute last pie that night (a Napoli).

I went to Fuse Factory the next night and Bill had the portable wood fired oven set up there.. The rush wasn't near as bad and I was able to score 3 pizzas for an impromptu gathering.. oh my I do love Bono..

Bono and Jeni's is like heaven on a plate> I'm a bit jealous as I ate BBQ before I headed to Junctionview Saturday night and didn't have room for a san rolando. Thanks for the heads up next week....

I'm surprised that Bill's Pizza Hat hasn't caught on fire yet.

There was a lot of generosity in the parking lot that night. Pizza Zombies were stumbling into the area and things could have got ugly!

I was the first to arrive and walked away less than 15 minutes later with 3 yummy masterpieces.....

Bill needs to stay the entire summer....please, pretty please.....

Smart move!

We got there at 7 and they had to stop taking orders at 7:30. They brought enough supplies for a Friday night at the old location on Russell Ave but sold out in just the 2 1/2 hours.

The generosity of those with pizzas to those without, after a long cold winter of Bono deprivation, was one of the most moving testaments to human virtue that I have yet witnessed.

I almost feel bad saying this...but...

WTF???

First of all, they made pizza..great, it was good pizza. They not only got HUGE publicity on here for free, but got actual cash donations, and vanished like Kaiser Sose. Guess what, I hope they do kickass stuff in the future, because I liked them...but enough already.

Bill has been bouncing back and forth between a couple locations and having a variety of issues in getting re-opened in a legit space. I don't think his intention was to ever screw anyone over. Sounds like he's just had a lot more trouble than he imagined.

Fingers are crossed that it's not going to take too much longer....

Right, exactly -- though it's more than a couple. I've lost count of the number of new locations I've heard about, that were in the works (to varying degrees) but fell through for one reason or another. I think they're getting pretty tired of being without a place too.

This one is operational. Wood-fired oven. I think they've got another inspection to pass before they can actually open, but that should happen within a couple of weeks, I gather.

I actually got an e-mail today from Bill!

He actually posted something three weeks ago on a front page article (hence why you didn't see it), saying if you sent money shot him an e-mail (yerkesbilly@yahoo.com) for an update.
