I'm doing a photoshoot tomorrow and the kind of shots I have in mind involve a body of water of some sort. Pond, lake, Atlantic ocean -- I don't really care. Just as long as it's shallow enough to wade in as far back as 10 feet from the shoreline.

Haha, gladly. I'm not shooting anything terribly serious, just an exercise for school focusing on horizontal, vertical, and dynamic lines as well as inherent curves. For this assignment, I'm wanting to borrow some stylistic queues from Andy Goldsworthy and make use of sculpting with nature. I've got some ideas that toy with reflections.

My wife has started taking a serious interest in photography. Any suggestions for a good camera I can get her for Christmas? Something that would be easy for a neophyte to take up, but could grow with her as she gains experience. Thanks

I have always heard connon Rebels are good for that there SLR digitals.
I use film a lot of the time but some day when I have some extra cash I would like to look into a slr :D

not sure if it is too late but the olentangy is a good bet - go up the bike path north of campus and round the first footbridge (just before the wetlands) is an area with lots of shallows.
also on griggs there is a beach area just north of fishinger bridge - not sure you can wade out 10 feet, but certainly it is shallow near the shore.
Mirror lake there will be a lot of people around and campus security probably wouldn't be too happy about you standing in the middle.

Hoover reservior is nice too.
a really nice picture of buldings that I would like to see is from the doorway of Danny's Deli. if you are standin down by the doorway and you look upwards, then South east, you just see all the buildings messhed together. I caught this sight yesterday or it was really interesting. when you get it at the right angle there isn't any light between the buildings, it's really fricken cool.
so all, do yourselves a favor(2 favors really), go eat at Danny's Deli on Front and Broad, see the the sights!

I once got lost there, it's a nice area. there was no one around.
also the river area by the Whittier impound lot, whittier peninsula.

As it seems to be the consensus, get her a Canon Digital Rebel. It's a great entry level SLR. All of the lenses and equipment you'd buy for it are compatible with the higher end Canon bodies, so if you ever decided to upgrade you can still use all of your lenses and such. That's precisely what I'm doing, actually. I intentionally purchased the more inexpensive Rebel so that I could invest more money into great lenses, that's what really determines the quality of photos.
My recommendation would be to get her the Rebel and pair it with a Canon 50 mm F1.8 fixed lens. That lens is great for portraiture and would be very good for learning as well. It's only $80 or so, and she'd totally continue to use it if she ever decided to upgrade to a higher end body.
For my next purchase, I've got my eyes set on a Canon 24-70mm F2.8 L lens. I'll have to drop some serious bills, but that lens just rules.

Went back today and sort of got the shot I was going for:
I was hoping to play more off the leading lines and have one continuous diagonal line implied by the sticks and reflections, but, that proved to be more difficult than anticipated. Plus, the water was just god damningly cold.
I think I'd like to try this again sometime early in the morning with an infrared lens, still water, and fog rolling into the shot.
