Blue Jackets president: Casinos could solve team's financial problems

The Blue Jackets president believes that the casino taxes that will flow to Columbus and Franklin County would be the best fix for the hockey team's financial woes.

"I think it is the most viable solution, and it wouldn't require any other money being used," Mike Priest said today. "But it's up to the public sector to decide how it wants to use that money."

So people did not want a casino in the Arena District, but the Blue Jackets will happily skim some of the profits of the West Side casino for themselves to take care of their crappy lease agreement. Is that how this works?

That's just funny stuff. If the AD gets a tenth of a percent of the casino tax its too much.

I'm not recalling of the top of my head... Did the blue jackets themselves take an oppositional stance against the casino being located in the arena district? If so, yes, total hyprocracy. If not, then I don't think this is exactly as hypocritical as it may appear at first.

Either way, I think it's a bad idea and silly to even suggest.

That quote makes it sound like they didn't want to speculate on the impact of the casino in relation to existing restaurants... immediately following the passage that put the casino in the Arena District.

I guess I was looking more for some sort of official endorsement one way or another during the more recent relocation vote.

I agree ... all the tax revenue from the Casino should not be earmarked for anything Arena District related. People poo poo'd the idea of putting the casino where it would be a natural fit and now the people of the West side stepped up, let the westsiders have their spoils now. I am glad to see some of the anti-casino people on here agree.

A hockey bailout would be just as beneficial for Nationwide Insurance as it would be for the Blue Jackets. And Nationwide was the driving force to kick the casino out of the Arena District.

This idea of corporate socialism is something else. The Blue Jacket and arena owners (Nationwide, the Wolfes who own the Dispatch and the McConnels) are part of the political coalition that has propagandized a majority of Americans to believe that President Obama is a socialist. Yet, look at the piggies in three-piece suits lining up at the trough.

I see their game----pull-yourself-up-by-the-bootstraps for the peons and socialism for the elites.

How many times must Nationwide and the Blue jackets be told No?
Hasn't there been votes on bailing them out in the past? What results did that yield?
So much opposition to the Casino in the Arena in the first place and now they want money again. I honestly don't think they should see a cent. Not my money or anyones for that matter I am tired of having to bail out the big business because they can't handle themselves and learn to run something better. It's a trend that has shown us that they understand the word -Fail!

if the jackets can't get a decent lease from Nationwide, they should just move to the shot. it's big enough and there's already bars around it. and lots of kids who might go see a game if it didn't involve driving.

The idea that casino tax revenue will flow to local governments belongs in the category with the tooth fairy, the Easter bunny and the Loch Ness monster.
The state of Ohio pays into something called a local government fund. State lawmakers will offset whatever casino revenues flow in with an equal-sized reduction in the local government fund.
The money siphoned out of the fund will go towards paying the bills in the state budgets of the future.

If you don't believe me, take a look at what happened with the state lottery money that was directed towards education. I promise you this is what will eventually happen with the casino revenue. The Blue Jackets will never get a crack at it.

This proposal is kind of unbelievable. It's like the BJs and Nationwide are expecting us to forget the stink about the Casino next door. (I realize BJs never had an official stance, but they certainly didn't support it.)

This is really a problem for those 2 entities to work out among themselves, they are looking to the county, city and now the state to intervene in private problems.

If it is not profitable for a private entity, why should the government get involved to offset the losses? Don't we already have a state of emergency on the state budget? Yes, please, lets use those proceeds on our hockey team so they can afford their overpriced diggs. Yeah, that's where we need to spend it.

FYI - Miami-Dade is dealing with the end result of giving in to the pressure of a team (and commissioner) who kept threatening for public assistance in the building of their new stadium with the implication that they would move the team without public financial support... this article is VERY insightful into the business minds of the Florida Marlins organization:
