The Sports Page: NHL Team on the Move

Once upon a time there was a town called Winnipeg in the mysterious land of Manitoba, Canada. Though the natural climate was cold, the sports climate was anything but. Many moons ago, the Winnipeg Jets were the toast of the town. Founded with the World Hockey Association in 1972, the team joined the National Hockey League in 1979. During the 1990s operation costs rose for NHL teams and the Jets began to feel the strain of being in the one of the league's smallest markets. The team slipped into the red despite the tenacious fan base and their relentless desire to keep the club in town. (We're talking Cleveland Browns' fans level dedication ironically enough dealing with something similar at the same time on Lake Erie.) In 1996, the Jets left the Canadian tundra for the Arizona desert. Winnipeg has been without an NHL team since then.

Blue Jackets Select 6 Players In NHL Draft

ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Columbus Blue Jackets wrapped up their 12th National Hockey League Entry Draft on Saturday by selecting six players during rounds two through seven.

"We are pleased with our results in this draft," Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Scott Howson said. "Not having a first round pick made it a challenge, but we managed to add to the depth of our organization at all positions."

Duo believe ‘Jackets will be in NHL playoffs next season

Newly-acquired center Jeff Carter and defenseman James Wisniewski stirred up the local media and several hockey fans during Wednesday’s press conference at Nationwide Arena after assuring the Columbus Blue Jackets will qualify in the Stanley Cup playoffs next season.

I am pretty pumped with the changes too! Bummer about Juice getting injured, but that might mean that we make one more major splash to pick-up another player. It will be interestig to see if some of the young guns will be able to stick with the team this year, or if Kris Russell will end up playing in Springfield with his twim brother, more then he does in Columbus.
My wife and I have attended about 10 games a year for the last few years, including the 2 playoff games. That will change this year though since she about to deliver our first child.

Needs for a top center and defenseman have finally been addressed. This is great news. I am cautiously optomistic about the season. The goaltending situation is a major concern. If the new goaltending coach can straighten Mason out, great. If not his backup is a success in the AHL but has no NHL experience. Could be scary back there.

I think it will all come down to the play of Mason this year. Also, I hope and feel that Johansen will have a descent first year and surprise alot of people, that is, if they bring him up. He's ready.

R.J. Umberger Signs Five-Year Contract Extension With Columbus Blue Jackets

Not exactly the start CBJ fans were hoping for

Given the hype of the off-season moves made by General Manager Scott Howson, first landing a top line center in Jeff Carter and then getting a scoring defenseman in James Wisniewski, fan expectations---despite Wiz's eight-game suspension for a hit to the head of Minnesota's Cal Clutterbuck---were high that the Columbus Blue Jackets' would come out of the 2011-12 gate with a win in their home opener against the Nashville Predators Friday night.

The game friday was not a rough one that really came down to the unfortunate gloving of the puck by a stickless jacket during a power play that led to another powerplay that led to a goal. Its a mistake to give the other team that kind of opportunity, but yeah, ok... it happens. I thought the original penalty was BS, but whatever, the other team got stuck with a bullshit call too. So it evens out. It was some pretty good hockey and a fun game to watch.

Saturday's game, on the other hand, the jackets looked like they were playing drunk or asleep. It was just BAD. I don't mind the jackets losing as long as the game is played well, it's fun to watch. Saturday's game was just sad and so uneven it was no fun at all.

To picture a Columbus Blue Jackets fan is to imagine a Midwesterner in a hockey jersey screaming, “Come On!” for eleven years. Many Jackets faithful again left Nationwide Arena shaking their heads after Monday night’s disappointing 3-2 loss to the Vancouver Canucks. Vancouver improves to 1-0-1 on the year while Columbus falls to 0-3-0, the worst start in franchise history.

Sweeping Changes in Columbus?

The Columbus DIspatch reported this morning that sweeping changes could be in the works.

According to their report, multiple NHL sources have informed them that former Columbus head coach Ken Hitchcock has been contacted about returning to the team as head coach, and former Calgary GM Craig Button has been sought after regarding the GM position with the Jackets.

Blue Jackets down 0-8 to Philadelphia after two. Just when you think the franchise has hit rock bottom, they dig deeper. Major managerial changes have to be made, from Priest on down. I've been watching sports for 40 years now, this is the worst franchise I have seen.

How long is Arniel's contract? Does Priest axe him and bring back Hitchcock, or make Richards coach? Paying three coaches is absurd. And what do you do with Howson?

Quebec City is giving Columbus 140 million to keep the team here.

If you want to pack the house and PAY YOUR BILLS, you better keep getting acts like Bob Seger to play your arena at least 3 days a week. There was more cheering and clapping in the two hours of the Seger concert, than the last two years of the Jackets' games.

How to Right the Ship in Columbus

When I started this blog back in 2007, the primary reason was to give myself an outlet to put my thoughts out in the open and generate discussion. As most of you know, I'm not a Columbus resident. I live in Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia, the same Halifax suburb that produced that guy that plays in Pittsburgh. As you can imagine, the folks willing to chat about the Blue Jackets were few and far between, so a blog was really my best option to get my fix.
