Save the Date! Bike Columbus Festival

Consider Biking is excited to partner with the City of Columbus and numerous other organizations to present a weekend festival from Friday, July 16-17 and Sunday August 1, 2010. We are excited to build a festival that brings together multiple bicycling endeavors, will focuses attention on the bicycling, and raise funds and resources for bicycling-related projects and efforts.

I'll be looking forward to this event very much. I'll need to purchase a new bike since my last one was stolen. If anyone is selling a decent road bike please let me know. Here is a video I shot in Boston of one of their Bike Friday events.

Check out Third Hand and Franklinton Cycle Works. Both great organizations and I know I saw some decent stuff on FCW's facebook page in the last few weeks.

Also check out Handy Bikes (they also sell used bikes and are having a 50% off sale now). I hear they are also opening a new store soon somewhere on the west side. Nice People.

Third Hand is a great source for learning maintenance/repairs.

The event dates are July 16, 17 and Aug 1. The Mayor's Twilight tour Is 8 pm Friday nite, $25 includes 20 mile family friendly ride, lite supper after and ticket for future crew game, what a value.

It must be a long week for me and I'm getting confused:

What tour are you referring to as the "annual Bike Columbus tour" on the poster?

Its a good question, technically this is the third event of this kind for the City's institute of Active Living, although this is the first time it is a multi day event.

Volunteer Meetup, Tues 6/29 @ 6pm

We invite you to an optional volunteer meeting for the BikeColumbus Festival Tuesday June 29th. It will be at 6:00 at 4041 North High Street in 300-J. The purpose of this meeting is to have everyone meet each other and to discuss the volunteer opportunities. Additional meetups will be held Tuesday July 6 and 13 (packet stuffing) all are optional, but we appreciate any assistance you can give. We're rolling along. There's more than 200 riders for both Friday and Saturday!

Thursday at noon is the last chance to register online for $25 (for Twilight or Barbour Tour) or $40 for both. The Twilight youth rate is for ages 4-12 is $15 with an adult and includes Crew Ticket. (under 4 can come in free).

It's been a whirlwind! Both days were a huge success, but not without gliches and complaints. Overall we are very happy with the festival, especially for it being the first time as a multi-day event.

Did anyone get a chance to ask the mayor if he'll support bike and pedestrian facilities on the proposed urban avenues related to the 70/71 split? The avenues should have, on both sides, sidewalks, tree lawns, travel lanes that accommodate bicycles and on-street parking.

The urban avenues being pushed by the mayor's public service department aren't acceptable. A twilight bike rally don't mean crap if a mayor who knows better will settle for substandard streets.

From Consider Biking:
We've got a set of the I 70/71 Split fix plans at the Consider Biking Office. Contrary to many reports, we believe ODOT has accomodated bicycles very well! We'll schedule an open house to view on Mon Aug 9th.

BikeColumbus Festival Exceeds Expectations

THANKS for your support! The BikeColumbus Festival has exceeded our expectations! We ended up with close to 500 riders EACH, for both the Mayor's Twilight Tour and the Steve Barbour Memorial Tour. That's over 1,000 unique participants that came out to support bicycle safety and active living, and to have a great time in a multitude of fully supported events. Not bad for the first year of this concept! AndÃ¢â‚¬Â¦..there's still an upcoming weekend of racing too.
