Big Woody’s Opens This Weekend
Columbus, OH (March 24, 2011) – Columbus’ Arena District is about to get a lot more lively as Big Woody’s officially opens its doors to the public this weekend with a VIP Grand Opening Celebration Saturday night.
Tickets are still available for Big Woody’s VIP Grand Opening Celebration at BigWoodysColumbus.com. Tickets are free, however attendees must sign up online prior to the celebration. Anyone who signs up for free VIP Grand Opening tickets will also receive a complimentary appetizer courtesy of Big Woody’s.
Prior to the Grand Opening Celebration, Big Woody’s will host a special ribbon cutting ceremony with the Big Woody’s staff and members of the Columbus Chamber of Commerce this Friday, March 25 at 4 p.m.
Inspired by Columbus’ rich history and tradition, Big Woody’s is the brainchild of its ownership group, comprised of three restaurant and bar industry veterans – Chad Shumate, Trey Morton and Christopher Ortleib. The trio has nearly 30 years of restaurant management, sales and marketing experience between them and they will put that knowledge and expertise at work with Big Woody’s.
Big Woody’s will offer a full menu for dinner featuring classic bar and pub staples such as Big Woody’s wings and pizza, plus an assortment of appetizers and grilled panini sandwiches. The bar will serve up nightly happy hour specials and dozens of televisions will show all the big games.
Open Monday through Saturday from 5 p.m. until 2:30 a.m., Big Woody’s is located at 165 Vine Street in Columbus, just blocks from Nationwide Arena and Huntington Park.
Get up and have a good time at Big Woody’s – a high energy restaurant and bar with an unpretentious attitude and infectious atmosphere. Big Woody’s offers a casual, comfortable surrounding to celebrate with old friends or maybe even meet some new ones. Stop by Big Woody’s to see your favorite team play on one of their flat-screen televisions, or munch on an appetizing menu featuring wings, pizzas, paninis and more. ... and the real reason why the place stayed closed for so long is that the rent is insanely high.

If you know what the rent's going to be and you don't have enough cash saved up/access to capital to pay the rent for a year without selling anything you're taking a huge risk. Perhaps it works a little differently in the bar and restaurant biz, but not having that that kind of backing would make me nervous. Hell, as a retailer I'd have a lot of trouble getting somebody to lease me space if I wasn't in that situation. Maybe I'll figure out the secret to sliding into leases without capital as I become more experienced.

Some restaurants have to buy their ingredients on credit, every single week, because they don't have enough free capital to get above water.

I knew quite a bit about the inside dealings of what was happening before they closed. The corporation that leased the property tried to renegotiate something cheaper than the 30k per month they were paying. Of course those talks went absolutely nowhere. So the corporation simply stopped paying rent until the owners of the property... or whoever they paid... showed up one Friday and boarded everything up. I think they owed around 85k, about 3 months rent.
In my opinion, the only possible way to come close to their 30k lease fee, would be to utilize the great patio stage that they have through the summer, saving enough cash to lose their asses through the winter.
Successfully running concerts means hosting a wide range of demographics, styles in clothing, etc... Most corporate style bars/clubs have no interest in allowing patrons into their establishments that don't meet a certain "criteria". Unless of course its a business that they are already involved in.
Not even sure who is behind the lease this time around, but if its another corporate bar/club... it will fail. If we can bet on it over at our ghetto Hollywood casino, I'll throw $1000 down on it being closed within a year.

I'm not sure what this means. They tried to renegotiate their lease on day 1? Yeah, good luck with that. Why did they sign a lease with such a high rent if they knew they couldn't pay it?
I suspect they never had any intention of paying it.

"Shahriar Kazemi will open a club in May at 165 Vine St. where the Lodge Bar and Big Woody’s used to operate. The plan includes a pub and grill in one room and entertainment area in the other, with the patio providing another stage and bar. Kazemi is behind the Arlington Entertainment Complex on West Henderson Road that has evolved over the past 20 years with similar establishments."
