Kinda of makes Tattoo-gate seem tame.

An explosive sex abuse scandal and possible cover-up rocked “Happy Valley” on Saturday when former Penn State defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky, once considered Joe Paterno’s heir apparent, was charged with sexual assaulting eight boys over a 15-year period. Among the allegations was a 2002 incident in which a graduate assistant for the team said he saw Sandusky assault a boy in the shower at the Nittany Lions’ practice center.

The state grand jury investigation also resulted in perjury charges against Tim Curley, Penn State’s athletic director, and Gary Schultz, vice president for finance and business. The two administrators were accused of failing to alert police—as required by state law—of their investigation of the allegations.

It is very odd that nobody went to the police, especially since Sandusky was not part of Penn State in 2002. It was an egregious crime with victims who could come forward at any time. In fact it boggles the mind. I wonder if Sandusky has some other knowledge they were afraid would get out.

Couldn't agree more.

I almost started a thread on this a couple times. I simply cannot believe what happened, or didn't happen, in regards to the actions of those who knew what Sandusky was doing. They were aware of the foundation & his access. It's all unbelieveable to me, that all these men knew what was happening, under their noses and did nothing.

Police questioned Sandusky about an incident in 1998. Sandusky, who was presumed to be Paterno's heir apparent inexplicably retired at the end of the 1998 season. What they had was knowledge of Sandusky that they were afraid would get out. They chose the football program and its revenue over the protection of these boys. Heck, they never even bothered to follow up with the boy from the shower incident.
They had multiple times they could have prevented future victims. The same goes for the charity, The Second Mile.
There is no reason that anyone involved with this sordid mess should still be employed at Penn State. That includes the president of the university.

Rape always involves sex, otherwise it's not rape. Abuse can involve sex, but doesn't have to... as in, slapping the shit out of your kid is child abuse, but not necessarily sexual.

The DA investigating Sandusky in 1998 inexplicably stopped the case. He disappeared in 2005. His car was found empty and his laptop in Susquehanna River. He was declared presumed dead in 2009.

Perhaps "rape scandal" is more appropriate, since that's what it really was. To me this looks like:

I was actually trying to ask Twixlen why she thought it's not a sex scandal. I mean, does "sex scandal" imply there was consent? It doesn't to me ( see: "Catholic Church sex scandal" for instance ).

Rape scandal works also, though.

First of all, I haven't heard anyone refer to this as a sex scandal. I've heard it referred to as a sexual abuse scandal (as in the story above). Quite different.

Secondly, if they end up giving out a Paterno Trophy at the end of the season to the winner of the first Big Ten Title Game, there is something very wrong.

Rape scandal works also, though.

"Sex scandal" implies consent. It is a term used in context with Kardashians, or with politicians that get caught dipping their wick outside the confines of the marriage bed. Perhaps "Forcible sex scandal" or, as suggested "Rape scandal" is more appropriate. To simply say "sex scandal" implies something titillating and again, consensual.

Better yet, let's call it for what it is - Penn State's Serial Pedophile Scandal. It's a little wordy, but it sure is accurate.

A good example - the Duke scandal was most commonly referred to as the Duke Lacrosse Scandal....

If Paterno is allowed to stand at the sidelines of any of the games, something is very, very wrong.
