I know the governor pissed a lot of people off basically saying OSU (OK St) couldn't compare to Northwestern in a very condescending way and that's why Mizzou should go. I'll try to find the email I was forwarded, I think the story was linked. Family of Pokes would be happy to boot them now :)

“I’m not going to say anything bad about the Big 12, but when you compare Oklahoma State to Northwestern, when you compare Texas Tech to Wisconsin, I mean, you begin looking at educational possibilities that are worth looking at,†Nixon said in an interview with The Associated Press.
Man, I didn't know he trashed TT too. Now I'm offended! Snobs :(

Those are just two of the main reasons Mizzou would want to move to the Big 10. On top of that, Brady Deaton, the Chancellor of the University, has said that the University would consider an offer. The Governor of Missouri has publicly said that Mizzou should look at moving to the BIg 10 as well.as they say in espanol, muy interesante. any links to these quotes?
Here is the quote from Governor Nixon:

http://www.columbiatribune.com/news/2009/dec/20/frustration-and-temptation/Full Disclosure: I'm a Mizzou Alum and I'd love to see them join the Big 10. It would be real nice for all of their football games and more of their basketball games to be on TV in Columbus.

thanks for the insight Nash61. Mizzou would currently take my bet in any pool on this.

Mizzou?
Doesn't have the academics.
US News & WW has them ranked 102
Indiana, Iowa and Michigan State are currently tied for last in the Big 10 at 71.
I know, these rankings don't mean anything.
Tell that to the University presidents.

I love love love OSU, but completely have to disagree with the people saying that Northwestern should be dropped. They are a founding member of the Big 10 and we are not - they have as much if not more right to continue with the conference than OSU. Plus, with the Big Ten offices in Chicago, a close drive to Evanston, they make sense.

i'd like to see mizzou join. i don't think we should really be talking crap about another schools academics. prior to 2001 ohio state was the biggest joke in the midwest. i was not a fan of karen holbrook overall, but if it wasn't for her it still would be.
no way northwestern should leave. it has the academics and the big 10 feel.
if you want notre dame to join, you need to watch this chilling report:

Tell that to the University presidents. Most University presidents despise the criteria, weighting and subsequent ability to stack the deck in the US News rankings. Most play the game, except some smaller, elite liberal arts are actually beginning to fail to boycott the survey, but they loathe playing it. I think they would weigh the AAU factor over US News.
But as for rankings, keep Northwestern.

OSU has been one of the premier research institutions in the Midwest for a good long while, and Holbrook didn't help any more than Gee or Kirwan. The main thing she did was try to make the school more culturally white-collar, by increasing tuition and selectivity and by trying to circumscribe many of the more visible blue-collar expressions of campus culture (tailgating in particular).

Ohio State had some weak undergrad program (not all, their engineering and couple other majors were still pretty good) prior to 2000, they always were strong in research and grad studies.

okay, so OSU was a great research institution. it was still a shitty school that virtually anyone could get into. i knew people who were accepted AU 2000 with a high school GPA of less than a 2.0. even kent read, kent write, kent state looked down on OSU.

this policy didn't directly lessen the academics or research, it did lessen criteria of student selectivity, retention and graduation rates. essentially unprepared students could arrive, but most likely they wouldn't make it through.

I understand but to generalize a whole school which includes 15 colleges and over 100 majors a joke is a bit harsh. I can attest to the fact that it wasn't easy getting into Ohio State College of Engineering in 1997 with 3.8 GPA and 1320 on my SAT. But I did go straight into Engineering instead of being undecided as a freshman.

Please do not sing the praises of Karen Holbrook. She and her cronies were paying lip service to turning OSU into a top 20 research institution and little else. There is a reason one of the first things Gordon Gee did was to get rid of Sanfilippo, who was the head of the College of Medicine under Holbrook.

Tell that to the University presidents. As with any school, Mizzou has some great programs and some not so great programs. I wouldn't put too much weight into the US News rankings. One of the things brining Mizzou's rank down is that they have a high acceptance rate, similar to what OSU used to have. That doesn't mean the academic programs aren't good. For instance Mizzou has one of the top 3 journalism programs in the country and one of the best Ag programs in the country.
As to how this applies to Mizzou moving to the Big 10, I don't see any academic gap between programs that are already in the Big 10 and Mizzou.
