I know there are some people who read both CU and donewaiting's message board, but for those of you who don't, this was posted over there this morning. The victim in this case is the father of RJD2 according to what was posted.
Especially given the number of cyclists on this board, I though it might be something people would be interested in. It's a pretty scary story, IMO.
Dear CDT Patrons and Friends
Regrettably, I need to share some information with you regarding a prominent member of the Columbus Arts Community - David Krohn. Mr. Krohn, a long standing Columbus dance and theatre artist, was assaulted last night while riding his bike near the OSU Campus area. He was attacked by four men in a car who threw bottles at him eventually knocking him off of his bike and was then assaulted. He was knocked temporarily unconscious and his jaw was broken. He believes that they began to chase him because he had placed his hand on their car to regain his balance while waiting at a traffic light.
Mr. Krohn danced last night in Columbus Dance Theatre's production of Dancing Alone. He did so with the impeccable wit, charm, kinetic facility, and warmth. He performed an expanded version of his ongoing work, Autobiography. Undoubtedly, this unfortunate incident will find its way into this evolving piece of theatre and dance. Mr. Krohn will not be able to perform for the remainder of the run of our performances this weekend. But, we are certain that we will all enjoy seeing him back on stage very soon.
As many of you know, Mr. Krohn makes his living as a performer, electrician, and carpenter. When I saw him at the hospital I told him that I would share the information of his situation with the dance community through our list serve. I would like to go one step further.
CDT will be collecting donations to aid Mr. Krohn with his medical expenses and lost wages. people are nuts!!! i would be alittle ticked if someone at a light leaned on my car but i would never attack or hurt anyone. some real assholes thugs out there. i hope someone got a plate number.

This is beyond sad- it's really heartbreaking. I haven't really even been able to comment on it since reading it earlier in the day...
It is just heartbreaking... it is a real emotional roller coaster, life. There is so much beauty and giving... and then so much misery and tragedy- and without one there is not the other.

This is not a critique....
The donation form is not secure (https). I really hope the CDT fixes this.
But, please donate something to David to help cover his expenses and, moreover, to let him know that there is a caring community that can deliver 1000 kind acts in turn for every one senseless violent act.
But donate via phone or mail until this is fixed.

im sure it was the same breed of toothless asshole that shot at us with a bb gun at bodega last week. the funny thing was they yelled "fags" at us aswell and i was most likely the only fag there.

Violence against cyclists is very under-reported. I know three people personally who have been struck and injured by morotists in the past month. Two of the incidents were hit and runs with no plate number or leads. All of the cases involve partial or whole destruction of a bicycle that are expensive to repair and replace for most street cyclists.
My last incident was in february leaving Tip Top. I was biking on Gay toward High St with another cyclist. The motorist intentionally used his mini-van to run me into a parked car in front of Brioso all while his passengers were taunting and cursing at us. I was OK and we eventually chased them down and scared them with the fact we caught up. We called the police and they went to serch for the assailants, but never got back to us after a half hour so we left.
Motorists assults on cyclist can and do lead to death- thus these people are potential murders. Murder carries the death penalty in Ohio. They do not understand the gravity of thier crimes. Do these assailants know they are risking thier own lives too? Vehicular homocide?
The atomobile is a deadly weapon that kills three time as many Americans a year as guns.
A friend of mine who was hit in December are in the hospital for a month is thinking of starting a web-site/forum where cyclist can post plate numbers, drivers, and other info of people who have threatened thier life on the road.
There were or are bie gangs in NYC that carry spray paint on them and tag cars that harm or threaten them in any way. The tag is a symbol to anyone who understands what to do next at thier own descretion.
Anyway. Please be careful and understand the lethal potential of motorized vehicles.

I was thinking of the city setting up something specifically for cyclists (and hell, pedestrians too) to report such things. Mapping out where these events occur most would help for putting in signage, etc. I'm betting we have enough data already. Even on a seemingly empty road, like Park towards Buttles along Goodale Park where there's that poorly done median where I could easily see a car try to speed and squeeze its way past you, I always periodically glance over my shoulder to make just to be safe.
Even after this and The Ride of Silence (7:00PM May 21st) we don't even have a single sign for bikes put up whether it be Downtown or OSU. To their credit, City Council did get a good deal of funding for the bikeways plan because of that ride, but how about a god-damn sign or two in the meantime? What is that, a few hundred bucks, maybe a thousand? It's road related and a pittance, so why the hell don't we have anything except for that sign on 3rd Ave that says "Watch for Bikes"?
This brings us to the problem of poor wording for these signs. "Watch for Bikes" and "Share the Road" really don't cut it, though I was a proponent of the latter. Both are interpreted by drivers as the road being theirs and they have to watch for bikes and share their road with these annoying cyclists. "Expect Cyclists/Bikes" gets the point across much better and that is that the road belongs equally to bikes and cars.I'll go ahead and email city council in light of this event, maybe we can at least get something good out of it.

Where i grew up this kind of thing happened all the time. My father worked with 2 guys who would ride bikes for long distances. Everytime they would ride on a road that traveled threw the country they said rednecks would throw beer bottles at them out the window of their truck.

I guess my rednecks were more tame; pretty sure we stuck mostly to honking loudly and passing close enough to create an air-wake.
Of course, I was so far out in the country, even the cyclists probably had shotguns, so perhaps minding manners was warranted. :D

My sister got clocked on her bike once. Thing is they usually yell at you before they do it so you're "supposed" to ride into the ditch to get out of their way. People are fucking stupid.

The problem is the jerk off drivers and the jerk off cyclists that ruin it for everyone. You have drivers that make cyclists bitter and cyclists that make drivers bitter. I totally admit I have a lot of reservations about cyclists. There is nothing worse than driving down a two way street and seeing a cyclist in the middle of one of the lanes. Or two cyclists riding side by side. Or cyclists not following traffic laws. And I know it's gotta suck being on the same streets as cars all the time, and a heck of a lot more dangerous. I just don't know what the answer is. You have these small groups that ruin it for everyone else.
