I'm probably going to catch hell, but I kinda agree with Enzo. It might be the 10 hour workday or the 8 cups of coffee, but it's not half bad.
I would love to see something like this on College Campuses. Have one of the companies design a simple, durable bike that could be mass produced fairly cheap and serviced pretty cheap. Probably mountain bike style, 26" tires, single speed or single speed/coaster brake, with a solid rear rack and front rack or basket. Dyno hub powering front and rear lights would be great.
Have a limited number of options and make it a Model T kind of deal.
Universities can partner with the manufacturer to be the authorized provider for that campus, the bikes could come packaged with a quality lock and and RFID chip like OSU police offer currently. Some schools offer computers that can be leased for the 4 years and then it becomes yours. Spread the cost of the bike over the 4 years with a small charge. Having a unique bike like this could help deter theft.
I think one of the big reasons we haven't seen cycling catch on in the States because of the early experiences one has. Mom and dad buy you the cheap Huffy from K-mart, which continually breaks down. Then you get your license. Bye bye bike. You head off to college and buy a bike to get to class quicker to get more sleep the monday after the party. You buy another cheap huffy to save money for beer, skimp on the lock. Bike breaks or gets stolen and now bikes suck. So you go back to the car.
Having something inexpensive, durable and reliable would go a long way to getting more people out there.
