I don't think anyone is saying that all cyclists are jackasses. My point is that this is a problem more for cyclists in general. The increase in hostile encounters on the roads brings a negative effect all cyclists. It's a disservice to anyone who takes up cycling and destructive to efforts promoting road sharing awareness.
Every time this kind of thing happens, your going to have just one more person who is less courteous towards cyclists on the road. I'm glad there are communities out there who recognize this concern.
Motorcyclists deal with similar douchebaggery but revving up with loud pipes in front of Jeni's is not the same as verbally confronting or flipping off random people. If someone acts like a jackass in a group of responsible riders, the jackass is usually cast out pretty quickly.
Don't accept this behavior. Don't ride with assholes.

They are a very vocal minority though, and it's a turn off for many. I don't think you personally are such an offender, but your transit peers are doing more harm than good.
You keep referring to Consider Biking, which not everyone here reads. I think that site does a lot of good for people. I'd love to see more outreach projects.

I don't have the time to link to the posts from vocal cyclists that are giving me a bad impression of cyclists in general. I never said that the posts were offensive or hateful. They are, however, really annoying.

Yes.
Cyclists, while increasing in number, are still a relatively uncommon encounter for most motorists. Each instance of douchebaggery gets amplified into to representing all cyclists more readily.
I do lament though that our expectations are so low that being flipped off by a car driver for no real reason is hardly worthy of comment anymore.

I'm not such a cynic; I haven't been flipped off by a car driver in years, and the only unfriendly car-car encounter I had was when I pulled into a parking lot at the sprawling suburban shopping mall near where I live and got honked and hollered at by a crazy lady in a minivan who had her eye on the same space. (I let her take it, and karma was on my side ... I found another spot in the next row much closer to the doors.)

That's my point, it is a very vocal minority. Why some here feel the need to call it out as if it represented the entire group-and do so with such snarkiness, is beyond me. I think we know what to expect from some and as you read through, take it with a grain of salt and get over it. Life is too short to nitpick and take offense or annoyance at every little thing. Besides, the more extreme positions can offer balance to the discussion by providing contrast to a more sensible, reasonable idea.
Programming committee meets tomorrow, I'll be sure to bring up the outreach ideas.

For one thing, I haven't been here long enough to tell everybody apart, so the cyclists all sort of blend together.
Life is too short to nitpick and take offense or annoyance at every little thing.
I agree, and if it was something I had only read here once or twice, I wouldn't have said anything.

I don't think that's how it works; if you make an argument appear more rational by inviting or encouraging someone to make an even more extreme, off-the-wall, unsustainable position, you're still not actually improving the original argument. You're only making it appear more "sensible" and "reasonable" in the sense that 180-degree water feels less warm to someone who's recently been drenched in boiling water. The former is still scalding.

I agree..
I generally try to wave and make eye contact with people while riding. I find that I often get a wave back in return.
I'll admit to occasionally giving the "one finger wave" to drivers that pass me with inches to spare with their horn blaring. I'm not perfect..

Let me try again.
We start with two very extreme positions, say keeping 3rd Street as is and another proposing speed humps, 10 MPH and lights that aren't synced. After 25 pages we would find a pretty middle ground coursing it's way through that could see a 2 Way 3rd St, Lights synced and some traffic calming.
The extremists, on both sides, have very valid points buried deep within. Most of the time. It's through the positive (usually) sounding board of places like CU that the middle ground can come out.

I called the police yesterday on a middle aged man in a beige Japanese crossover SUV with plates DRB 1578. His automobile got to close to me in violation of Ohio's 3 foot law so I tapped his car with my knuckles as it went by to get his attention of how close and dangerous he was.
He slowed down. And rolled down the window. I told hime that Ohio has a three foot law and that he was too close. I was about done and ready to ride away, but we both got a red light. I was getting into the left hand turn lane anyway, so now I was at his driver's side widow. I stopped and explained to him again the law and that I tapped his car as a warning (like when you honk a horn). He responded by saying that I don't belong on the road, and he futher threathened to harm me in an unspecified way. I got my phone out and he responded "who are you going to call?" I said the police, and the light turned green. I made my turn and stoppe in the UDF lot to call it in.
I am more than frustrated, aggrevated, and mad about people threatening and coming close to severly injuring, maiming and killing my friends, my girlfriend, and other fellow cyclist. I will not hesistate to stop you and explain what you are doing and the potential consequences. I will not hesistate to call the police and take pictures of you.
If someone were to shot a pistol a few inches from your face. Did not hit you, but was certainly dangerous, would you just blow it off? No you would feel pretty endangered and victimized and you would seek some proper outlet of justice.
I'm really fed up with this and I am more concerned with the well-being of cyclists than our collective image.
