Hey organization nerds,

We are working on our company-wide mission statement. The family includes Betty's, TipTop, Surly Girl Saloon, and Dirty Frank's Hot Dog Palace -so far... Since you guys are our employees, friends and customers we would love to hear what you think. Does this mission statement reflect your experiences with us?

BettyÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s Family of Restaurants is an alliance of socially, financially and environmentally responsible restaurant concepts dedicated to enriching the lives of those who live, work and play in Columbus.

Personally, I think "restaurant concepts" sounds way more corporate than the feeling I get when I eat at Betty's or Tip Top.

Kid: it's an alliance of concepts, not an alliance of businesses.

i think it sounds fine. very corporate/resume sounding.

I'd assume this will be for businesses, not customers. so you really aren't advertising your zing to customers, you are relaying your business philosphy. i mean, although it "can" sound like the nature of the atmosphere of the restaurants, it doesn't 'have to'.

Tim, first off, love the avatar!

Second, who is the intended audience for this mission statement? If it's a bank as part of your business plan or your employees as part of their hiring contract, then to me it sounds fine as is. But if it's going to be printed on your menus or posted in the restaurants, it seems a little stuffy, which doesn't fit the overall feel you guys have at all.

ha, loving the feedback!

no bank we've ever dealt with has ever cared about a mission statement, they just want collateral and projections...

we are mostly developing something for our staff, this won't be on any menu anywhere.

after working on it this morning, we (me, carmen, tim & amy) were challenged to put it out there as a reality check to our staff and friends for feedback and criticism. we welcome it!

Betty's Family of Restaurants (BFR) IS an alliance of concepts but I think it is ALSO an alliance of businesses. Each restaurant does share a common denominator (Liz Lessner shares ownership in each one) but they are separate and independent of each other. Each restaurantÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s ownership structure is unique.

Where it gets hairy: What exactly IS BFR then?! I think that's one of the things we're trying to define! :) We're certainly an alliance. An alliance of concepts? Of businesses? Of friends? How about simply Ã¢â‚¬Å“Of peopleÃ¢â‚¬Â? I think any of those terms could work by definition.

Hmm..Ã¢â‚¬ÂPeopleÃ¢â‚¬Â I kinda LIKE itÃ¢â‚¬Â¦.

In response to the Ã¢â‚¬Å“AudienceÃ¢â‚¬Â I think the Mission serves the constituents that all the respective restaurant owners care about most; our employees, our customers and our communityÃ¢â‚¬Â¦.

If said constituents think Ã¢â‚¬Å“concepts/ businessesÃ¢â‚¬Â sounds stuffy than I think we should take that into account!

Coreroc's revision thoughts:
1. Just remove the term concepts and leave it at Restaraunts or possibly use the term establishments.
2. Add Eat to the list of things supported in Columbus

it would read like this:

BettyÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s Family of Restaurants is an alliance of socially, financially and environmentally responsible restaurants(establishments) dedicated to enriching the lives of those who live, work, eat, and play in Columbus.

Otherwise you guys are right on track not only with your mission statement, but also backing it up with your actions. Oprah has nothing on LizLess!!!!!

The word "alliance" actually comes from my partners' desire to use words commonly found in Voltron or Star Wars.

A concept is an idea; seems silly to call actual restaurants "concepts."

"restaurant concepts"
restaurant is the adjective that describes the noun(concept), restaurant is not the noun in that sentence.

No, they aren't.(I don't read it that way) they are saying their corporation is an alliance of concepts. or to put it in better words, the building blocks of their corp are an alliance of (restaurant) concepts

"Dedicated to enriching the lives of..." isn't very descriptive and sounds a little bit dramatic for the type of restaurants we're talking about here.
