With the colder weather, I've picked up smoking my pipe again. I love it - it's a pipe I inherited from my late grandfather. Still have the old clothe bag for it, labeled "Made in England."
I usually buy pipe tobacco from a place in my hometown up in Michigan, but I want to get to know some of the better places in Columbus. Any suggestions?

of course, closer to home you have smokers haven, on high just north of the blue danube on north campus. They always seem a few steps less excited to help out. i would say this is 'normal' and pipes and pleasures is 'excellent'.

Barclay's at Lane Avenue Shopping Center is always where I stock up. Great service - they always give out free samples of stuff...also, this is where Jim Tressel buys his cigars. :D

Burning Leaf Tobacco. Jeff is a good dude. Small small shop, but tons of cigars and some tasty pipe tobaccy to try. I get most all my cigars there and if one of the chairs is open, sit down and enjoy. Great for cigars close by, but not so much on the pipe tobacco.
Skreened is absolutely spot on with P&P. When it comes to pipes they are the only ones in Columbus that do it right. (I worked 4+ years in a tobacco shop so I don't say that lightly.) Steve and Rosie do it really well, they've moved their production facility to their farm, so you can't see what Steve is currently working on, but it is always worth a long visit. Plus, they have a great "lounge" area to enjoy your new tobacco or cigar. Sadly, they have the shop up for sale, and if I was a bit more adventurous I might take it on. Whoever buys it will have some big shoes to fill. They really know how to take care of a their customers. Tons of knowledge and lots of new stuff to explore.
So definitely trek out Main Street and spend some time wandering around, nothing better on a cold afternoon. I'll make the same offer as Skreened, I'd be more than happy to ride along. They are open till five pm today if I remember correctly.
Oh and on this subject, the Original Smokers' Haven on Bethel has finally puffed it's last. From what I heard yesterday, they closed last week. So the only Smokers' Haven in Columbus after decades is the one on N. High above campus.

Side note, what kinda cigars do you guys/gals smoke? I am hooked on most of the CAO brand line of cigars, with the brazillia being my all time fav.

too many to name vestanpance - but CAO really has stepped up their quality and selections in the past years. Brazilia is very good, the Italia rocks, and the America line is tasty - though they could use some time out in a humidor to mature a bit, but great cigars all around. I also like their gold and gold maduros.
Can't forget La Gloria's Serie R's or the Punch "Champion".

On the ciger tip (hehe), wouldn't that empty space between The Patio and Sugar make a great cigar bar? You could make millions.

five years ago - yeah you could do it = I was working on it in 1999. but these days because of the Ohio laws there isn't anyway you can feasibly do a bar with food and qualify to be under the anti-smoking laws. Look at Shi-Sha on High Street, they JUST qualify. According to the law your sales of tobacco must make up over 60% of your sales in order to be exempt. This is why places like P&P and Burning Leaf can have folks smoke inside. But even with a small bar, you can easily lose that percentage.
I'd love to have a place to go again, but sadly I have to stick to my car, front porch or the shops. Wait till they start with "you can't smoke in your car" or outside.....OHHH wait! they do that in some places.

I think now would be a perfect time for it. Since the property I was thinking of for this is right in the arena district, it seem slike it would benefit from teh smoking ban. I don't know the exact laws, but couldn't you do a small ($1) "membership fee" and call it a private club? And, since it's only cigars and small food items (I'm talking maybe some wings, but really thnking more upscale) wouldn't your 60% be covered?
