My hubby and I live in Merion Village and have a 2 1/2 year old. We plan to stay in the city once she starts school and would like to get some ideas on which elementary schools are the best within the downtown area. Any advice, opinions? Anyone else have a little one in school in the area?

Indianola K-8 is supposed to be great (if you're lottery eligible). Not exactly downtown, but pretty easy access.

Preferably, public school...but would be interested in learning about private options, as well.

If you had a time machine I'd strongly endorse Douglas.
That said, it's not what it was and will be closing anyway. From what I've heard, Indianola is a lot like what Douglas was when I went there (86-92), so I'll second that recommendation.

I live in merion village, and have heard really good things from neighbors about St. Marys on 3rd St.

My daughter started kindergarten at Duxberry Park - it's a little north of downtown on Joyce and Maynard. It's an arts-focused school and so far we're very happy with it - and she just loves it.

Alumnus of Indianola here. I would definitely recommend them to anybody. Berwick is also a good bet and not too far from you.

Indianola K-8 for sure.
Try the lottery (and be sure to have a back-up).
Good luck!Posted 2 years ago # -
There will only be TWO left after this year (St. Mary & Stewart) in downtown and the surrounding neighborhoods (ok, three- South Ohio)

^ St. Catherine-on Fair in Bexley?
I attended from 4-8 and had several amazing teachers. Don't know if any of them are still there.

Hmmm. So basically, it's the lottery or private school. This relates to the other thread on why homeowners prefer the suburbs.

I still contend parents are the crucial component. If you aren't willing to be a partner in a child's education, then it won't matter where they go.
