I have been using McAfee for several years now, my subscription is about to expire, and I am hoping to find a decent free or low-cost anti-virus software package. I still like McAfee, but it can slow down my Windows XP OS considerably.
Mostly I just want to be able to scan for, identify, and remove malware (though I can't remember the last time I found anything on my computer). Software firewall capabilities would be nice, too. Being able to see when and from where I'm being pinged is a cool feature but I can live without it.
Any recommendations and advice for anti-virus software? I have heard good things about AVG and Panda.

I've used AVG Free for many years, no complaints. As for a software firewall...unless you click on questionable ads and links, I think only using Windows Firewall should keep you safe.

NOD32 wins nearly every 'competition' that tests anti-virus. check it out.
Anti-virus is a moving target. Years ago McAfee was awesome and Symantec sucked. then about 2 years ago Symantec rocked and Mcafee sucked. Now they both suck but symantec sucks a considerable amount less.

For free software you really can't beat AVG. It usually wins the major websites' best free anti-virus software every year. I've used it for years with great success.

I've used AVG Free for years with no issue. Recently I've been using Microsoft Security Essentials. It is free and has a very small footprint. It has also gotten good reviews. You should check it out.

For a solid protection:
Spybot Search and Destroy - Malware & Virus scheduled scanning + registry locker (TeaTimer)
Peerguardian - Blocks a blacklisted set of IP addresses from reaching your PC ranging from advertisers, Chinese hackers, to the RIAA. This is kind of a big deal.
Nod32 - standard antivirus minisuite: file system monitor, on demand scanner, internet traffic scanner, MS Office Macro monitor, & email scanner. This is what I've used for the past couple of years and I LOVE it. It was all freeware when I started using it, but that may have changed since... either way, I haven't had an issue and I feel secure about my PC.

Another vote for AVG.
For spot-checking & malware removal (vs ongoing preventative protection), Malware Bytes' Anti-Malware tool is awesome - highly recommended: http://malwarebytes.org/.
The full version DOES do realtime protection, but is, of course, paid...

I'm using Spyware Doctor with Antivirus and it has done an excellent job for me. I think it cost me $39. (Maybe $59, not sure.)
My subscription is up in a few months and I too would love to find something free that I could trust.Posted 2 years ago # -
PeerGuardian is history. It has been replaced by PeerBlock. I loaded it this weekend. When I allow HTTP to access my computer, it blocks out a lot of sites that I normally go to.

Sorry it's taken me a while to get back to this thread. I wanted to thank everyone for their advice. I tried AVG but I wasn't halfway through their download process when (to their credit) the program informed me that it would have serious compatibility issues with one of my productivity suites which I can't afford to upgrade at the moment. So I ended up with avast! and it's doing its job so far. And my computer is running so much better without McAfee on it.

+another on AVG. We're Mac and Ubuntu now, but when we had a PC it had AVG Free and Spybot S&D.
Some other free goodies (PC, Linux and OS X compatible)
Microsoft Office Replacement - Open Office
Photoshop Replacement - GIMP

Lojack Replacement - Adeona (this is a must have for laptops to track theft)Posted 1 year ago #
