Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions for a good quality affordable HD video camera. Looking for something to use casually, but still able to produce a semi-professional-looking HD picture.
Thanks!

I have a Canon HV30 for shooting live concerts and it's worked out pretty well. Canon replaced it with the HV40 since my purchase. Current Amazon price is ~$650. I usually shoot remote and then pull the footage in via firewire or hdmi. On the very low end, the flip hd (~$200) can be good for a quick interview. On the higher side you'll be getting multiple sensors and better low light performance/less noise.
I've got the flip HD and the picture is great. Needs a external mic for good sound though.
If you truly want semi-professional results, stay away from the Flip. They are awesome for what they are, but no one would mistake their footage as "semi-pro" without double-system sound and hours of transcoding and editing. mavrck has it right on the nose. The Canon HV series is amazing for the price. I have an HV20 and have used it on paying gigs.
In March, Canon is releasing the Rebel T2i, an HDSLR camera that has 24p video capture capability. The starting price is an astonishing $800, and you get the added benefit of interchangeable lenses and manual focus control. And since it looks like a still camera, you can get away with shooting video without making everybody around you camera-shy.

I thought of you when I read this thread, John. I really enjoyed your videos that you posted on CU. I know a lot about still cameras, but almost nothing about video. So when someone as talented as you posts a recommendation for a piece of equipment, I know it's sound advice (not to discount anyone's advice here, though). If I had an extra $650 I'd go buy one now and I bet I'd enjoy it.

Thanks for the suggestions, all. Looks like I still have more research to do. ;)
I just invested in the Canon tdi and I love it. My stills have improved dramatically and I have the benefit of HD video when I want it.
My experience with a flip camera was that it was very hard to prevent shake in the recording.
It depends on what kind of stuff you will be shooting. For instance, the Flip recorders have been the best to work with when recording loud events. I've been amazed at times at the ability of these little guys not to muffle live music - especially right in front of the PA at the treehouse (the room is extremely small.)
I've used a Flip cam and think it can get the job done. What's one step above a Flip in the HD category?
The Canon VIXIA HF R100 is the cheapest HD cam with the ability to use an external mic that I can find. At $500 this is a big step. Seems like some manufacturer would fill this gap.
I found Canon's Vixia HF20 refurbed for under $500 from B&H.
I have never owned a camcorder, so please excuse my shaky hand; but I shot this real quick at the earth day celebration in franklin park yesterday.
I think the video quality is quite impressive and I was surprised how well the internal microphone did.
(please click through to go to youtube and make sure you switch it to 720 or 1080 HD; I dont think you can embed HD version)

@paktinat - Nice video! Audio and video quality were both really good considering an outdoor environment. Just so you know I think that's the Miss Molly Band.
The most affordable one I've found is the one I just won from Marlboro.
Samsung U10 HD camera. Pretty sweet for free.
A Plug for the new best phone ever, get the HTC Evo when it comes out, a phone that ccan shoot 720p video, and has hdmi out. Problem solved.
