I tried to call Benevolence today and got the "this number is out of service" message. Tried their website, which had been absconded. Is it closed?

They were doing some remodeling, right? Adding the big shared patio up top with Callahan's? Did that project get finished before this closure concern, or is that still going on?

I've seen a "fairly new "help wanted" sign on the door the last few times I rode past, and it looks like they keep making progress on the remodel. The rooftop patio is almost done, and they have workers inside the store doing the remodeling work on occasion..

fwiw, benevolence also changed ownership recently.

The Dispatch's Obit file says that Benevolence never came back from remodeling, which probably means they closed. :-( The story is at the bottom.

Dammit. I'd been counting down the days 'till that place would reopen. Benevolence has been a family favorite since the old North Market days; I have friends who insist on going there whenever they come into town. To say it will be missed is a vast understatement.

It was a gem. I always wondered why they had two locations (the North Market and the storefront) so close to one another. But it was a great spot for the vegetarian-inclined diner. I used to eat there at least once a month.

that is really sad. If anyone wants to buy it for me I'll open a yummy carryout with local foods! ;)
I just hope it doesn't turn into another bar.

I think the rooftop connects to the bar next to the old Benevolence space (on park).

They were originally saying the rooftop patio space was going to be shared by Benevolence & Callahan's.
The closing seems like it opens the door for this - http://www.columbusunderground.com/forums/topic/what-do-you-think-cu
Or it could make a great spot for sushi.

I had heard a few months ago that Callahan's was planning on taking over the Benevolence spot. But I didn't really trust what I had heard. I just figured that the person telling me was confused about the actual plans for the space. In light of this news, I'm not so sure I was correct in my original dismissal.

Looks like the Dispatch obit file might have jumped the gun:
• The owners of the Benevolence Cafe, still waiting for renovations to be completed on their space at 41 W. Swan St., will offer some of their fare this weekend in a booth at the Universal Light Expo in Veterans Memorial.

I had lunch with the Benevolence owners on Saturday and they are in fact re-opening. They were horrified to read that they were closed and have not been able to find out who on earth gave the Dispatch that information. The Benevolence owners are wonderful people, they love what they do and look forward to serving big plates of their delicious food very soon. I miss them much and can't wait to see them come back!
